There was a thread here a few days ago on this topic, but I could not find it. Anyway, I bought a set of these yesterday. i am referring to the 30 dollar air deflectors that snap onto the engine guard (crash bar for us old guys). Mine would not fit over the tank bolt on my 2010. I cut the top ears off, drilled a hole above the crash bar section, and installed a zip tie. For experimental purposes, I only put on the right side deflector, and placed the other one in the saddlebag. I had a 45 mile trip to run, so I could get a pretty good comparison with and without the deflectors in place.

My particulars: 2010 FLTRX, vented H-D lowers, vents open. 12 inch KW shield. C&C solo seat. I am 5'11 inches tall. 208 pounds. Extremely attractive, and I like puppies. Capricorn. 51 years old. Wind speed between 5 and 10 MPH. Cruising speeds between 45 (construction zone) and 75 (55 mph speed limit) MPH

Checking with my hands while traveling down Highway 79, the air near the gas tank was dead still, both on top and side. Air moving quickly near bottom section of handlebar on side with deflector in place. Other side, wind whipping over gas tank and around the side of tank.

Effect on rider: On the side with no deflector, lots of wind on the side of my head. On the side with deflector, much less wind. I have a long beard, and have become accustomed to it whipping around and up in front of my face. This is my sixth Road Glide, so this is just normal for me. Still better than waking up everyday and scraping the hair off my face. I pulled over and installed the other wind deflector. Moving again at speeds up to 75 MPH, there was MUCH less turbulence around my head. My beard hung straight down, just gentling blowing in the breeze. No whipping around my head and popping me on the shoulders. Less wind noise. I hear the radio much clearer at lower volume. Gene Watson rips my heart out, and them Tucker Boys make me crank that throttle.

Conclusion: For my particular set of conditions, the deflectors work very well. I have not tried them with my lowers off, and will not. The lowers are there to stay. Glad I bought the little deflectors. I had my doubts, but they work very well for me with the equipment that I have installed.

I am heading off on a trip down the Natchez Trace tomorrow morning early, and can give an update on the effectiveness of the deflectors when I return.

UPDATE October 8th:

Works great! Over 700 miles, even running 80 MPH, really cut down on the turbulence. Still get plenty of air. It is not like riding in a minivan. Love the new parts.

I just put the HD deflectors on my 2010 . I think they work well for the $29.95 price tag. I do not feel the buffeting as bad, and can definitely hear the radio much better even at speeds over 80 mph. You can put your hand up in front of the gas tank and feel the air that use to follow the contour of the tank now shoot straight up .

I'm not saying this is the greatest thing since sliced bread but for the price it's not bad.

I'm currently running a HD Wind splitter, HD lowers, (HD wind deflectors.) Almost just right, Just a litle more and Ill be there! lol

I aready got the Sancho's wings . I Just have not installed them yet. One thing at a time . This way I can tell what worked and how it's working. I'll post my results on the Shancho's wings soon too . So far I'm impressed with workmen ship.

I also was wondering Rippest about the rain. Glad to hear the HD deflectors help with rain too. Rain is one of those things if it rains while your out just push on , but who wants to start out in the rain just for a test ride? lol

fyi - i stopped by the hd shop this weekend for some questions i had about which seats fit which models. anyways i found out that on older models there was this half moon shaped piece that was mounted to the forks on the backside under the fairing by 3 or 4 screws. this piece is now an option and i only saw it in chrome. but i believe that this piece and the deflectors together would seal off that area in front of the tank pretty good to direct air under everything. can't remember what the name of it was right off hand & i am having trouble finding it on the hd website. it was only 25 or 30 bucks. i am going to get one and i will post the pn# when i do. should have just bought the dang thing when i was there.

i think i found it....using the eyeball method at the shop it looks like it should fit -

I believe someone already tried both together (fork baffle & air deflector)and said they work against each other. I'd be curious to hear about your findings.

The Air baffle (cow bell) came stock on my 08 in black I then installed the chrome air baffle (cow bell) on my bike there a 3 tapped holes on the lower tree to accommodate the cow bell , I also have the snap on Air Deflectors on my bike .
IMO the Air Baffle & the Air Deflector complement each other also they DO NOT interfere with each other and are perfectly compatable & yes the snap on Air Baffle fits on my 08 perfectly .

I believe someone posted here, or somewhere a fix for the 09 Tank Recall and deflector problem.

The mounting bits the MoCo designed for the 09 recall campaign take up all the room behind the tank mount tab and cover the part where the C clip would attach, so you either remove the safety bits from the MoCo (two plastic parts) or go without.

Or, you can do as he said cut and drill,
I was thinking you could cut the C Clips, sand and glue them to the HD
tank mount fix parts, they are both plastic, however that would mean to remove
the deflectors, you'd have to pull the tank back... a Pain.

Someone said they got longer bolts for the tank, then a spacer
from a hardware store IE Ace that was the same OD as the od of the
receiver for the bolt on the frame behind the tank mounting tab

Just slide the deflectors out a bit and onto the spacer...

Just drill two holes in the deflectors right above the crash bar and tighten down with mini tie straps . Slip the top of the deflector on the out side of the tank mount bolt head rather than the inside. (Easy on, easy off.)
Moving the top of the deflectors to the out side of the tank mount cocks the deflectors bottom just a little, but the tie straps pull it right back in. The top of the deflector is not real tight but it's not going anywhere .

i bought the air baffle earlier today (i guess technically yesterday) but i wasn't able to get it installed. i do not have the wind deflectors at this time so i will be just testing the air baffle (half moon thingy). i was planning on getting the wind deflectors later to use with this. kind of dissapointing to hear they might not work together. seems like they would do well together. oh well. i will give it a shot anyways.

fyi - the pn# 58520-79TC is correct for the front fork air baffle.

thats good to hear that they can/do work together. looks like i am going to have to just give it a go & see what happens. do you have the sancho wings or lowers as well or are you just running the "cow bell" & wind deflectors?

#24 ·
I am just running the cow bell & air deflector @ this time . I use the HD snap on lowers and they snap on @ the same place the air deflector does , I have not tried to use both at the same time yet because it has been warm here but it looks like I will have to do some modifications to be able to use both .

I had one on my 2002 Road King, and it worked very well. When I traded in, I pulled it off and installed it on my 2011 RGU. Fits just like it did on the RK, and seems to make some difference, Those plastic deflectors that fit on the engine guard, combined with the fork baffle, works like a charm. Ridden in some heavy rain and stayed dry (for a change!).

The wind deflectors look like a great idea for the money. I'll be getting some soon. I don't have lowers (yet). Has anyone thought of not needing lowers if you have these installed? My longest rides are always in hot weather. Call me crazy, but the hotter the better. My rides are MUCH shorter in cold weather Some, but not everyone, says the lowers can cause overheating issues. I have a 2010 RG and rode to Sturgis last year from Kansas City, MO and some days my air temp gauge was pretty well pegged. I plan to have a oil temp gauge before next long hot ride.

I rode a 2007 UltraClassic for over 3 years with the "front fork air baffle" in place as well as the lowers and chrome wind deflectors that HD said wouldn't work on an Ultra due to the lowers, with a little modification, they worked well. I don't smoke, but if I did, I could have lit a Marlboro with a Zippo at 70mph no problem, these items re-directed that much wind off the rider.

I have the new fork baffle mounted, the new wind deflectors on order, and the Sanchos side deflectors waiting to be installed on my brand new 2011 Road Glide Ultra. I fully intend to make this bike ride as free from wind buffeting as my old UltraClassic, what ever that may take. Next step will probably be a windshield. I usually use a different one for winter riding that blocks more wind, then in the summer, I put the stock, shorter version back on.

I will know more once I get an opportunity to do some riding. Too much holiday mixed with no time off from work, new bike with no time to add all the new parts, and just plain ole not enough hours in the day to get it all done...

back from a much needed vacation. got the "front fork air baffle" installed and luckily enough had a nice warm (allbeit windy) day to test ride. in between the 30 mph wind gusts i believe that this made a marked improvement. doesn't totally get rid of the wind but definately a big step in the right direction. hopefully i will get even better results once i get the wind deflectors bought & installed.

on a side note..had a little difficulty getting the "front fork air baffle" installed. the powder coat had plugged the holes on the bike where it mounts so i had to get the holes tapped in order for the mounting bolts to go in. just an fyi for anyone thinking of making this purchase.

Myself and another forum member had that same problem, and broke at least 1 bolt off in the triple tree. It stays on with 2 bolts holding it, but a tap would be really good to run through the threads first.

I dropped the 30 bucks and it took a lot of cold air off my face. No more tears in cold weather. Had them for about a month and have ridden down to about 25 f. Wife noticed less turbulence on the back too. Should have come stock. 2011 FLTRU.

Cheers!
