Congrats Harley,.. you have finally made to 2011 and realized that people are picky and want to custom order their rides!

Here is the news clip

Harley-Davidson is launching a new factory customization program, letting customers order their motorcycles with their choice of personal options.
Starting Feb. 4, Harley-Davidson customers will be able to design, build and personalize their new motorcycles with the new H-D1 factory customization program.
Harley-Davidson has released a new website for the H-D1 program. Full details have yet to be revealed, but the site provides an idea on what to expect.

Customers will be able to design their motorcycles online or at a dealership with upgrades and custom paint from Harley-Davidson’s Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories catalog. If the parts catalog’s 8,000-plus items proves too overwhelming for some people, they can also consult with Harley-Davidson dealers to plan their H-D1 custom. The custom designed bike will be assembled at the factory to be delivered.
Harley-Davidson has also released a video to promote the H-D1 program. It’s a bit abstract, showing people walking around in cages before cutting to an engine roar and the tagline “A revolution in personal freedom is coming.”
Here is a link to the Harley Website, not much there now.

Pretty cool, and something that people have been screaming for, for a lot of years.

Wonder if Harley will give the deal on accessories that most dealers will when you buy a bike from them. I think it will be full pop for everything. No more room to deal with the dealer.

Anyhow I don't see much difference from ordering the parts when you buy the bike. Dealer usually put them all on for free prior to you taking delivery of a new bike.

Custom paint would be nice. Never figured out why they are limited to certain colour schemes on some models where others are almost unlimited.

Interesting news.

When I bought mine in 2005 I ordered the stage two set up with the 95" motor, low profile touring shocks etc and thought it would have been nice to just order the bike as I wanted it and maybe be credited for the stock components I didn't need or want.

Now today I still have a brand new set of jugs, cams, air intake, pipe, shocks etc that are in my way....dealer sure didn't want them and I though was a waste of my money to have to take them in the first place.

This may be a good thing? maybe...

Now that is cool!

I've always daydreamed about being able to sort through the parts bin and build my own version of a Screamin' Eagle...

I wonder how far they will let you go? Painted frame, performance options, wheels, etc...

Edit: I sure hope they are not just going to offer a theme and then have a list of parts to swap. I truly hope the bike would come from the factory with custom parts, and credit given for the stock parts I didn't use.

Otherwise, it's just someone helping me read the P&A catalog...

The dealer is going to have to make some money on your bike when you order it with extra's. Their tech's won't have to install as many parts after the sale. If you order all performance stuff, then Harley knows exactly how your bike was set up from the factory and if something go's wrong iwill they say (they ordered a race only bike, sorry no warranty)??????

I'll wager you will pay full price for the accessories, Maybe, just maybe they will reduce total bike price by the items your accessories replace...but I don't give that more than a 30% chance. There maybe a little more possibility of reduced custom paint costs since they have no duplicate standard-paint costs.

I see this move as more of HD trying to raise profits much like the CVO line, and I doubt you will get a customized bike with only the true incremental costs added on.

To a dealership: unless they see increased profits from selling the customized bikes, it will hurt their accessory sales & profits. HD is trying to get a little more $$$ out of each custom bike sale, and that $$$ will probably come out of the dealerships profit.

......... it'd be nice if MoCo combined the ability to order an accessorized bike with their 'Spectrum Custom Color Program', AND expand the custom color thing to the FLTR & FLHT lines.
..... I'm not always a fan of the custom painted tin series that HD offers, but being able to order a new bike in just the Harley color ya want would be a big attraction.

I Smell a Rat...

I went back over the H-D1 site. They mention something about being able to do this on a brand new bike, or the one already in your garage...

Me thinks this is nothing more than a marketing strategy to pimp more P&A parts. I bet the "Consultant", will be your old parts guy after he/she has had a class on putting together Themed Bikes from the P&A book...

Please, HD, tell me I'm wrong...
