The cost is pretty high IMO. The price on the engine isn't too bad but that is just for a stock engine, the price goes up if you do performance upgrades from what I understand.
Also you need to have the HD dealer do the removal and installation of the engine and the dealer has the extra labor of breaking down the engine to the point of splitting the lower cases just to send in the left side crankcase so HD has the side case with the VIN# so they can destroy the side case.
The only advantage is the fact that you will still have matching VIN# on your bike and if this is important too you then it is worth the money but I would think that you would have at least a $1000+ in labor cost having the work done at the HD dealer.
If you do mechanical work you can get the HD 96/103 Shortblock Assembly HD PN16200070 for $1,695 and use your existing 103 top end or you can get new 103 cylinders and pistons or you can get a 106/107 top end assembly. You could have a new engine 103/106/107 engine for $2,500 or less if you went with this option of course you would be doing all the labor.
