Harley Dealer nut and bolt pricing

Went over to my local dealer the other day and they strike again. This dealer is so close to my house and I find them to be useless 10 out of 10 times but I figured it was simple hardware so why drive to a different dealer if I didn't have to.

I needed a compensator bolt and the exhaust pipe to cylinder head nuts. I tell the moron behind the counter the part numbers and he grabs them. I them proceed to ask how much each item costs. Comp bolt is 4 dollars and change and each exhaust nut is $1.50. I am in no way cheap but are you friggin kidding me......$1.50? They were steel too, not stainless otherwise I could see how they might be more expensive but still not $1.50. I ask the dude why so expensive as HD directly says .59 cents. He says that's the way it is but I know we pay .30 cents for them. Buyer beware, go to your local hardware store when you need genpop hardware. Paid .50¢ each at my local Ace. Hardware and it was exactly what they sell.

I hear ya. I was quoted $3 each for rotor bolts and crush washers. I needed 14 of each. Talked to my local Indy. Was told they'd be fine.

to slightly veer off path.

Generally, steel is harder and stronger than stainless steel.

and yes - that is significant price gouging at the dealership.

You are correct without a doubt and steel is what you want but they do make the exact same exhaust fasteners in stainless too. Stainless is typically going to cost more than steel especially when the quality goes up.
This is just another reason that I stay away from the Dealer unless absolutely necessary.

Never bought from them but I love looking through their paper catalog.

Brad, McMaster Carr always ships very quickly and has just about anything You could want or need.
I usually receive what I order in a day or two.

Aren’t they in Melrose Park ? West side of 294, south of Grand Ave ?
I always go to Ace and replace my HD stuff with stainless hardware when I can and chrome stuff , and it's less moolah.

Use SS but polish the heads with a cloth wheel before installation and it will shine like chrome……

I try to avoid any dealer whenever possible. They prices they get for the dumbest of things is just ridiculous. Last time e I went to the dealer was e years ago for a seat bolt. I was expecting it to be like $5. or something but I got completely flabbergasted when he said "here just take it" lol
Funny you say that , cause I bought a giant bag of oil change O rings cause the dealership is nuts for what they ask for one each. Oh yeah got off of Amazon.

Same here for the retaining ring for the seat bolt. Guy behind the counter gave me 2 and said on the house. The dealer is particularly stingy too. I was surprised.
All I’ve purchased from a dealership in the last year was two spark plugs…….
Lucky Brad , my comp bolt was $6 three years ago

Yes, had a friend get in a bind one time using stainless, thinking it was better for the application. Better corrosion resistance, but softer and caused big problems……….

Harbor Freight has two boxes of O rings of different sizes. One kit is standard O rings, the other kit has nitrile O rings that are suitable for use with gas, oil and petroleum products. More than I’ll need for years of oil changes!

I use them when I know what I want. Sometimes I need to take the old hardware in my pocket and walk into Ace and match it up though…

Gemuine Harley-Davidson, lol. But ....my local Do-It hardware store isn't exactly painless when buying a single stainless fastener part from the plastic boxes.

Crazy: H-D gets $85 for the simple plastic horseshoe trim piece that fits under the ignition knob...maybe one of the worst price gouge attempts I've ever seen.

$20 fixes that, yet I think even that’s too much
