Does anyone have information about 2010, 2011 & 2012 touring model heads that develop spiderweb cracks? Heard about this from Dave Mackie's shop. They won't perform any mods to them because they may fail.
I tlked to Frank at Dragos today about doing my heads and he told me 08 and up are prone to cracking. 3 out of 10 he said. Im sending mine out tomorrow and im worried about this
The fracturing of the Mercury-Marine casting can occur in/around the guide bosses at the point of guide installation.
We use Extreme Pressure Lubricant # 3 on the AV&V guide on our Stage II, III, and IV Heads, and do not seem to have issues.

As I understand it it is only castings from a specific manufacturer. When I sent my heads in to Baisley he would only work on castings with a specific manufacturer marking. I got lucky and had the right ones. Mines a 2012. Just pulled my heads off after 18,000 miles. No issues.
Mercury-Marine has been manufacturing many aluminum castings for the Moco for some time now, to include the crankcases.
For the most part, they are pretty darn good.
