In process of installing HD Heated Grips, I had to remove Ignition Switch Knob. Trying to go cheap, I did so without purchasing the $105, 2015 Touring Model Service Manual - which I have since purchased after having Ignition Knob problem - not much help there once you've screwed up. To summarize, I removed Ignition Knob without marking location of Knob in relation to Lugs in Ignition Channel. I can't align Ignition Switch Knob on channel lugs. On top of that, the Security System is armed (Key FOB needs to remain within inches of ignition switch, even with main fuse removed), and once armed, it can't be disarmed without having Ignition Switch Knob mounted correctly. In order to disarm Security System, the Ignition Knob needs to be on Ignition setting. The first step is to install Ignition Switch Knob properly. It has turned into a nightmare. I made custom tool, used screwdriver - tried everything. With Security System armed, I can't see where Ignition Knob and Ignition Channel Lugs are because lights won't come on to locate Ignition setting on Ignition Switch Knob. Yes, I should have purchased service manual first. I'm not much of a wrench turner, but I've done all the work on my '04 Dyna LR - it is simple compared to 2015 Road Glide Special. BTW, installation of HD Heated Grips was a piece of cake. Help! Anyone with experience on Ignition Switch Knob removal and Security Systems on 2015 Road Glide Special out there? Thanks in advance!

Well, with the help of my riding buddy, I did eventually get the Ignition Switch Knob lined up and inserted with Ignition Channel Lugs, and got the bike into Fork Lock mode. BUT . . . . . the Forks are locked in every position of the Ignition Knob, with no power to the lights in the Ignition position, no power in Accessory or Ignition mode on the Ignition Switch Knob. And, I still can't disarm the armed Security System because no power to odometer. Don't know if that's the problem or not????? Anyone, any ideas?

Although maybe not the problem I would offer to ensure you did not bend any of the pins when you put the power wire back into the gauge cluster. I had a slight miss alignment when I put mine back together once and bent a pin and the cluster would not power up properly till I straightened the pin back out, just a thought if the ignition switch is back in correctly.

Go to home depot and get you a 1' piece of 1/4" copper tubing and a 3/8" piece too. I can't remember which size it is. Bend about 3"s of it at a 45 degree angle then take a hammer and pinch about just a little more than the length of the rod on the bottom of the switch. Stick it in the hole and you will feel each slot as you go down where the switch goes. Just turn slightly right and left as you go to catch the next cog. Once all the way down, pull it out, then stick you ignition switch back in it. Be sure you have the key in the switch, push down and turn to the left. You might have to re-push the little button under the switch to do this again. Then put the switch in, with it in and hold it all the way down and turn it all the way left and turn the key to the right where it will pull out and the switch should now operate correctly.

Thanks to all. This is very frustrating. Smarty, so even though I have Ignition Switch Knob set and locked in Ignition Channel, I'm still misaligned - internal lugs are ALL in wrong position???? Is that why the fork is locked in every selector position of the Ignition Switch Knob? And the Security System being armed has nothing to do with it? I really appreciate all the advice. Guess I need to get a mini cable light.

The alignment tool will help, but you might have to take the ignition switch apart to get it aligned properly. Each gear will have a different function, as to lock the steering, turn the bike on or accessories. I only know, because I did the same thing. I invested in the alignment tool afterwards.

OK. Figured it out. I had the Ignition Switch Knob inserted properly in the Fork Lock position. But as I described, the switch stayed in Fork Lock in ACC, Ign, Off switch positions. The final Problem????? The switch was too deep in Ignition Channel. In the course of working with Ignition Switch Knob, I removed the switch spring because it kept falling out or getting in way. Once I replaced the switch spring, all the Ignition Switch selector modes worked perfectly. The switch spring adds enough height to Ignition Switch Knob, so that the switch is only depressed at deepest point in Fork Lock mode with key turned all the way counterclockwise. Lessons learned! Thanks to those that replied, especially Smarty. Much appreciated!!!!!!

Dude,
I'm local (Anchorage), and just went thru the EXACT same headache less than 2 weeks ago, while installing new bars. Check your PM's. Give me a shout if you don't figure it out. It's easier than you think.

Yes, get the copper like I said and you can line everything up and bam, you are done.

Hmm

You don't need to remove the ignition switch on a Rushmore. Pop off the horseshoe trim piece and you can remove the gauge nacelle.
When I was at the dealers yesterday, they took my bike in to get it ready to re-adjust the bars. When I was in there, on my bike finding a good spot for my bars, the entire ignition switch was out.
