to do the install of these bars, is it mandatory to do internal wiring?
Can they be externally wired like the stock bars, since they do not require extentions?
Great post. I knew that I needed different bars, but not sure which ones. Does this job require removal of any part of the fairing, tank etc. for rerouting cables? I am not a bike mechanic, but this looks like a job I can handle...so to speak. They look great on your bike.
Heritage handle bar part numbers 56902-08 and 55864-09 were mentioned throughout this post. One is chrome and the other is satin black. The HD website said they were for 08 and newer. Would these bars work on a 2001 SERG?
The heritage bars are a big comfort improvement for me. The only internal wire is your TBW. The clutch cable and switch wires are external and a little snug but not too tight.
Just installed the polished stainless heritage bars. Started when the Steelers started playing. I finished with 7 minutes left in the game. Call it 3 hours. The wife helped put the fairing back on. Left the headlight in and used the video from Fixmyhog.com, which was suggested by Joke on the forum. The fairing took a bit of time to align.
I used an old bootlace to pull the TBW wires through the bars. I wouldn't suggest trying to internal wire these as the diameter of the bars and the bends would make it tough. If you chose to do it, my suggestion is to tape another bootlace in with the TBW wires and pull it with them, then use that to pull the other way for the other wires.
Overall I like the finished look and feel. I also switched to aileron grips which feel pretty nice too.
Let me finish watching the Steelers and I will snap some Iphone pics.
Thanks to all for instilling the confidence in doing this mod. The wife was praising me for my patience in doing it, too.
As you can see, the bars are not out of the pocket. they do give some good reach.
I left my mirror extentions on because I don't think these give you any better angle than the stock bars in that regard.
The pictures were in crappy incandescent light with an iphone, by a shaking hand.
The HD parts books says they are not compatable with heated grips but the tech I talked to said he could get them to work. Didn't ask what the issue was.

Good info, Charley, thanks!
I'll be putting the satin black heritage bars on mine, and will also replace the stock mirrors with the long stem satin black ones. And the new Kuryakyn black iso-grips with contour throttle boss would look and feel good, too . . .

this is only a guess but I think it is because harley says you need a new tbw harness and I bet the one they want you to get does not have the heated grip wiring. You however do not need the harness they say you do and the stock one has the plug already for the heated grips. Only a guess but there is not other reason heated grips will not work. the stock harness has plenty of slack for the heritage bars.
