I wear an Arai Defiant helmet and love it. My wife bought a 3/4 helmet from the HD dealership and likes it as long as we are under 70 mph. On the interstate I like to set my cruise on 80 or so. She's a small girl and says the 3/4 helmet hurts her neck and acts like its trying to pull her head off. Any suggestions? She says the full face make her feel costrophobic.

Defiant is a great helmet. But more of a round shell and as such closer to the face than others I tried. Is this the FF helmet she tried?

I have a Bell Star Carbon FF. Great for highway runs. Cuts through the wind and great ventilation. Very light. I pretty much wear it all the time. To me, it was roomier up front than the Defiant so if she feels the same she may like it.

Or perhaps a 3/4 helmet with a face shield. That may block the wind a bit for her while not fully encasing her head.

Good luck.

Ill have to look that helmet up. Thanks!

I would suggest replacing your windshield with something more suitable for your passenger. With the right windshield she will be able to enjoy whichever helmet she prefers. A Madstad, among others, comes to mind.

I haven't thought about that. Not a bad idea.

Hi eddienelson; finding a helmet for the missus can be a tedious task - I know! :D
What's her style, choice of colors etc. etc. My wife wanted a full-face helmet for the same reason but I talked her into an open-face helmet.
This helmet, Mag-9, from Bell is very nice, comfortable and made for easy installation with the Sena SMH10 Bluetooth or Cardo Scala Rider Q1/Q3 stereo headset and communication system.
Both visor and shield can be removed and the sun-shield is "drop-down" with the push of a button.

Try the SHOEI Neotec solid modular helmet.

It's a snug fit but comfortable and light weight and cuts down on wind noise over 70 mph. The flip up front allows her to to not feel too closed when not cruising on the highway.

Either a Neotec or a Schuberth C3 Pro. The Schuberth comes in a women's model.

And the Madstad too. You will eliminate all buffeting to your passenger with that.

A half helmet made my wife's eyes water. Full face was the claustrophobia. We went with a modular with internal sun visor.

Figuring out your wife's head shape is the first step. Also, the helmet needs to be snug. webBikeWorld is a good place to start a comparison to narrow down your choices.

I am looking at the RPHA MAX. Light and a smaller, more airstreamed shell. She currently has an HJC IS MAX. It is 6 years old now and doesn't match the Harley.

The Schuberth C3 is a high quality helmet and probably the best modular helmet IMO. I have had them since the C1s. What company offers them in the US?

Here you go..... I got mine at the dealer when I bought the bike. I took advantage of the 20% off of P&A they offered. You can find them at any BMW dealer, and many other multi-brand dealers (my dealer sells Harley, BMW, and Ducati).

I thought you had to ride a BMW and wear an Aerostitch to own a Schubert.
Oddly, I got the Schuberth when I traded in the K1600 on the Roadie. I actually do have a pair of 'Stich overpants, and I did actually buy them when I bought my R1200RT about 4-1/2 years ago. Still wear them for commuting. Never cared for their 1-piece suits though.

Lol! Have to first decided the wifes head type. My wifes type is HARD. The brown modular above looks like mine. I picked it up from cycle gear. It has built in blue tooth, and is made by Bilt I think.
Lots of room in front of your face internal shades, and flip up clear visor. I love it. And it was affordable. The clarity of the tiinted shade leaves some room for improvement, as it is not clear enough for my likes. Seems kinda foggy to me. I wear my sunglasses anyhow, so I never use the flip down shades

If wind is a problem some 1/2 helmets have drop down visors. Problem solved. If she doesn't like a FF she won't like a Modular its the same thing with the exception that it opens up. Nobody drives with a modular open at highway speeds. I have a 3/4 Biltwell with a bubble shield. I love the helmet and refuse to use the shield unless its raining. FF is out only when its COLD. I love wind in my face. I can ride my 15 RGS with regular eyeglasses in high winds and have no issues with eye watering . A properly fitting low profile DOT helmet in general doesn't lift on a bike with no windshield let alone on a fairing bike.

If your pic in your sig is still accurate, swapping windhields will help immensly. The shorty that comes on the bike might look cool but it is right next to useless unless you are 5'3".

I'm 5'7" on a really good day and the wind on the highway would hit my carbon fiber half helmet full on and would put a strain on my neck, I could only imagine what it must be like on a passenger.(Lucky me, my wife rides her own bike so I never have to worry about a passenger complaining about anything!!!)

There are a ton of windshields out there to choose from and I would look here for more info. FWIW I picked up 2 shields from Long Ride Shields and they were great working with me. Inexpensive also.

First, that's not a win shield, it's a wind deflector, defectin to your face.

Mine just wears a novelty type with visor, a bandana for fit and reduced lift and a face socks or two, with quick disconnect snap.

no left neck cramp

She does wear 100$ sunglasses or in a bind 400$ transitions

It is definitely a windshield issue. I sat up as tall as I could running 80 mph going to New Orleans yesterday. There was no buffering at the height my wife sits on the hammock seat. When we get home tonight I'll look into a taller shield.
