Ordered a set of 10” apes and a pair of tires, the dealer called and said they are in. When I went to make the appointment for the installation he said he needed the bike two days? I had planned on riding the bike in and waiting, knowing it might take most of a day. He said it takes about 8 hours just for the bars, that’s awfully pricey at dealer labor rates. Can’t leave the bike so just going in for the tires. Don’t know if I should try to do it myself or find another shop to do it? Hate to ask another shop when I didn’t purchase the bars from them.
How long should it take the dealer to install a set of handlebars?

Welcome to the world of customization I had one guy tell me 8 had another tell me 10
if I went with the chiseled low bars no cabling or wiring harness would be needed it would be three hours all of a sudden I loved my stock bars ordered heated grips they want three hours
I wanted to send my lower fairing parts out for paint one guy said five another guy said three hours labor do you have to shop

Put 14's on my 20 Limited and a buddies 19 Ultra with all stock cables and wiring. Did the 19 in 1.5 hrs total. The Rushmore bikes are probably the easiest bikes I have ever put bars on. Knoxville is about 5hrs away. Ride on up to WV and I'll throw a set on for you.
I just put 10 inch bars on a 19 RGS this past week and it was 8 hours labor at H-D dealership
But did it take them 8 hours?

You have to figure in a couple extra hours to realign the ignition switch if you do it yourself, lol. Ask me how I know.....
My buddy did mine, it took him about 15 minutes to fish the bars before it got there and 45 minutes to swap them. No cables were needed although he did use an extension for one. Took longer to take speedo apart and battery than the actual bar install. Blew me away and of course this wasn't his first rodeo.

I installed 12" KST Kustoms Renegades on my 2016 Road Glide Special. I took my time and I estimate about 4 hours total. I admit I have a higher than average mechanical background but was my first time on a Road Glide and a hydraulic clutch. Actually easier than the 2014 Road King I previously owned with a cable clutch. It's not bad at all.

I went to Biketoberfest yesterday and bought a set of 12" KST Spearhead handlebars. They were installing them in front of J&P Cycles for $750.00 including the bars. That meant they were charging $315 just for the install. I purchased the bars and tied them down to the bike and rode home. I have pretty good mechanical skills and It took me 3 hours in my garage last night. I know all these companies need to make money for their work but I think they also need to be a little more reasonable in their pricing and not take advantage of the people who don't have the ability to do their own work. Most Harley dealerships charge between 3-4 hours for that job which boils down to $375-$500 for the same job.

From the picture you posted it looks like you routed your brake and clutch lines incorrectly. I'd double check and correct that.

I agree with BH. That brake line doesn’t look right to me. I’m on my phone so I can’t really see the clutch cable.

I think everyone with negative comments forgets what the overhead is at dealerships (Just think what the power bill is monthly) plus the best way to piss off a customer is to NOT have the job finished when it was promised.

I have no problem paying something for what it is worth. But don't try and charge me 4-8hrs for a job that takes 2-3.
a lot of truth, Mofo's be cheap AF, bottom line, its the going rate, dont like it, do it oneself. i did and do. but i am blessed to be able to even ride a brand new bike, so in turn, i aint gonna pretend i cant afford the maintenance, done by Harley, an Independent or meself. I have always bought second hand bikes, did all my maintenance. this new 2020 RGS, its all dealer maintenance during warranty and yes, i am riding it under warranty. no major mods, its a fine machine as is. but some cosmetics, like bars, detailed matching floor boards or some more blackout versus chrome pieces, all me. back to the story, like ALL things Harley, everyone has a take, if my experience counts for anything, these new bikes are a cinch to replace bars. i have done a few through the years. not everyone is handy with a wrench. understood. end of the day, as always, do what you do that pleases you. enjoy the weekend...Ride On!
