This post will be only to keep you updated with items related to the Linconl Highway Gypsy Tour.

JULY 14 - Pittsburgh to Gettysburg Group

RIDE LEADER- HUTMO

I am planning on meeting any interested travelers in Pittsburgh on Thursday Morning to ride the Lincoln Highway to Gettysburg. We will stop in downtown Pittsburgh (part of the Lincoln Highway) and at the Flight 93 Memorial along the way.

Those interested can stay at a hotel in the Robinson Township area. I am suggesting the Red Roof Inn - Pittsburgh South. It is no palace but it is cheap. There are a few other places for more and This is a very safe area with lots of places to eat.

NOTE: There are plenty of rooms that are ground floor that open right to where you would park your bike.


On Wednesday Night, July 13th, we will go on a riding tour of Pittsburgh and have dinner at Primanti Brothers. This is the place that has the sandwiches with meat, cheese, coleslaw and french fries. You can also add an egg and onions for the full effect. I definitely recommend doing this. Wash one down with an Iron City and you have a party.

From Robinson Township we will travel to downtown Pittsburgh and pick up the Lincoln Highway Eastward.




A history lesson for you.


Prior to the Lincoln Highway there were no organized major auto routes to connect towns across the USA. Directions were along the lines of "go over that hill, follow the fence until you see the yellow house and then make a left on the trial that goes north west". With the gaining popularity of the automobile (thank you Henry Ford) individuals were able to travel at will, freeing themselves from the railroads. Automakers, many that never made it past the great depression (Maxwell, Packard, Studebaker and many others) promoted cross country driving as a way to demonstrate the quality of their vehicles. If their vehicles were able to withstand the rigors of a cross country drive than they must be of high quality!


Since its initial inception the Lincoln Highway (LH) has had multiple major alignment changes in addition to many minor local changes. The LH Association had to deal with local chambers, politicians as well as national politicians promoting and lobbying for their areas/towns to be included along the route. A merchant in 1915 wrote that traffic along his road has increased over 500% since they were included on the LH. Before the LH they saw a grand total of two to three cars per day!


The routes, especially out west, even as they changed to better alignments were still largely unpaved. Rain and inclement weather brought unimaginable challenges. As time went by improvements in road surface allowed cross country driving to become a bit less problematic to the travelers of the day. I am not even mentioning service station availability. A trip on some of the originals alignments will present to you a LH that remains unpaved but is still in use on a local basis.

I hope to share a few of these original roads with you! Just West of Pittsburgh along the Ohio River is a yellow brick road in a small community that is still in use to this day. It is the only yellow brick segment in existence on the LH and is one of a very few brick sections still intact. If anyone wants to go see it we can.

Fortunately the Pennsylvania corridor of the LH is well marked with much of the original road still being used. Community Leaders are realizing that the LH can be a boon to increase tourism to their areas. To this day the modern LH associations are facing difficult decisions as to which alignment should be marked.

I will try my best to show you some of the lost segments and to locate as many of the original Lincoln Highway markers that are still to be found in addition to taking you to Pittsburgh to begin our tour we will also visit the Flight 93 memorial. I live quite close and have yet to make my way out there to pay my respects.

I believe I will be able to make this. I don't know when I'll get to Cranberry Township. I start a new project in Columbus, OH next week, that runs until October. So a lot is up in the air. Got a free room at the Fairfield Inn for the 13th. That's a start. :)

Unfortunately, I could not get any free rooms in Gettysburg. :( The Courtyard is sold out of points rooms.

I should add, this will be my first touring trip. So any pointers will be appreciated. My only other overnight trip was to the Missouri HOG Rally, on my Nightster, and my wife came along in the car so we could all visit my daughter who lived in the same town, so that really did not add much experience (smaller bike, wife carried a lot of the luggage).

Gypsy Tour....I love it!!!!

If I could convince my wife it would be a really great birthday present for her...I am so there!
But I don't see that happening:eek:

I have changed the meeting point to Robinson Township. It is a better location to access the city and Route 30. The hotel I suggest is the Red Roof Inn. Cheap and decent.

Not to get nit-picky, but actually that is a Spring Hill Suites. A little more pricy than the Fairfields, but I still can get a free room. I have actually been there, there is a Chipotle across the street that I would stop at on the way to the airport when I was working a project in West Virginia.

Update - hutmo's lincoln highway gypsy tour

Took a look around the Red Roof Inn in Robinson Township and there are plenty of rooms everywhere on the first level with parking right outside your door.


Was doing some Lincoln Highway research and just realized that the street that I grew up one was one of the later Lincoln Highway alignments. COOL! That explains everything. :D

You know the sad thing is our area... including Pittsburgh does not exploit this fact and the roads are not marked as historic roads. The first cross country military convoy went ride down my road. Maybe it will become a new cause for me.

.....It looks like the Days INN is ON the Lincoln Highway....
AND did you know that the Lincoln Highway is a direct route to York where we will tour the HD factory where our bikes were born???

just wanted to share a bit of trivia with y'all:D

Update - hutmo's lincoln highway gypsy tour

I have been doing some additional research and it turns out that the street
where I grew up was designated an alternate route for the Lincoln
Highway... Who knew?

Spoke to a lady from the Pittsburgh Landmark Foundation about identifying
buildings in the downtown area that were present when the Lincoln was an
active road. There will not be too many but it will be cool to see which ones
survived.

LINCOLN HIGHWAY TODAY


The original alignment of the Lincoln Highway left Pittsburgh going West on
the Manchester Bridge down what is now Route 65 going towards Sewickley
and Ambridge PA.

The Manchester was torn down in 1970. The northern pier was left in place
after the demolition of the bridge. It was intended to serve as an
observation deck in the riverside park along the Allegheny River. The park,
later named Roberto Clemente Park, was built as part of the construction of
the now demolished Three Rivers Stadium.

The remaining pier was finally utilized and is now a tribute to Mr. Rogers... a
Pittsburgher and a world wide icon.

The Manchester is the bridge is the top bridge to the left in the image below.
The building on the North portion of the image is the approximate location of
what is now PNC Park. Home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The bridge on the right was the Point Bridge. The Fort Pitt Bridge replaced
the Point Bridge and the Fort Duquesne Bridge replaced the Manchester Bridge.

IN a later alignment... the point bridge was used to leave the city on the Lincoln...



Here's a great shot from 1969. You can see the new bridges and the old bridges. Pittsburgh has come a long way

wish I could make this one Chris , but wont be able to , hoping to go back to Ken's next year and mebbe we can hook up then ...

We did ride thru yer town while I was there tho' , if that counts for anything ...

Is anybody heading to Pittsburg from the New Jersey area?
Are you going via the Western Maryland route? If so, send me a PM. I live 45-minutes from Gettysburg, but was planning to head to Pittsburgh on the 13th via 70, 68, & 40 to Morgantown, WV then north up 79 to Pitt. I've decided to go ahead and meet up with Hutmo & the group in Pitt, for the ride into Gettysburg. I need to go ahead and make my reservation at the Red Roof. That sandwich shop sure does sound good.

If anyone else is headed to Pitt from the east and want to hook up for the ride there on the 13th via western MD let me know.

I'm about 2.5 hrs east of Gettysburg. For me to go to Pittsburgh would be either I-80 or I-78. I'm not sure of any other way I could easily follow from Glen Gardner-08826

Zach, your alot further North. If you were in southern Jersey it would make more sense to cut through MD, but from where you are 78 or 80 would make more sense.

Heading East to Pittsburgh

If I were heading east I would drop down to 40 across Maryland. You can take it east and then it will veer north west towards Washington PA, It is known as the National Pike. In Washington you can stop at Steel City Harley.

From there you can get on Interstate 79 North and it is only 20 minutes to Robinson Township.
