Hi,

My 09 RG with 12k mi has severe fading on the inner fairing. I took it to the dealer and they said they would replace it since the bike is still under warranty. BTW I used the aerospace 303 ultra violet marine protectant on it as it came highly recommended on another forum and it ended up being pretty useless.

Anyway I was thinking of getting a painted fairing from HD and paying the difference myself. They have not looked yet as it was late in the day but it looks to be a price difference of about $500-$600. The labor is free due to warranty. I still have to talk to the dealer but the speedo housing, radio housing and dashboard is also fading and I am wondering if that all comes with a new inner fairing or is it all separate?

I have a guy who is putting on 13" apes for me and he said he would have the inner fairing painted for $250 but again I forgot to ask about the little housings which with a painted fairing will really stand out if they are not painted as well.

Anyone else had this problem with the fairing? Is it normal for the fairing to fade within 2 yrs? I do not leave the bike in the sun as it is in a shed when not in use.

Also are there any disadvantages to having a painted inner fairing like glare or something? It will be black but I am pretty sure it has a clear coat on it like the outer fairing.

My 09 is doing the same thing, with about 16.5k miles on it now. I have not treated it with anything yet, but when cleaning the bike last week (while it rained for the entire week) I noticed that it is definitely fading.

I haven't done anything about it yet, but may try the same route your going with the dealer going for a replacement, and if I do, it definitely will be painted Vivid black.

I'm sure I can protect the painted surface a lot better than the flat black using Klasse All in One or something similar.

mine also faded ..before i had it painted i used a product made by Mothers called Back-To -Black ....worked pretty well
I've got a bottle of that stuff from my car detailing supplies. In your opinion, did it really help, or just mask over the problem?

When I showed the dealer yesterday he went back into the shop and came out with this, it covered it up some but you could definetly still see it. It may be good to put that on for prevention purposes but once you have the fading white showing nothing really helps but some type of paint.

Cool, ordered the painted fairing yesterday $400 out of pocket for me. They say it's about 30 days back order. While I was at the dealer the wife worked out a deal for a new 2010 Fatboy she has been eyeing for some time now:(...

After talking price for awhile I got them to pay the $400 for my fairing as part of the deal so now thats 0 cost but the cost of the new fat boy more than makes up for it for them:D
