I am going to be adding a king tour pack to my 13 custom.
I have never had a tour pack on any of my bikes, so my question is are the changes on the new Rushmore tour packs that much better than the old ones? I do know they are a little bigger and I think they look somewhat sleeker.

The total cost for the 14 after I have it painted to match my bike which is Candy orange will be about $400 more then a new color matched 13 .

Thoughts and opinions of those who have owned both would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I like the newer one much better and I think more than just the looks. Like you said it is bigger but also the hinge and latch system is better. It was worth it to me but even having mine painted to match my 12' Skunk I don't think it was $400 more than buying the older style already painted from HD. You may want to get other prices for paint if that is where the extra cost is. If you buy a new unpainted TP from Jon at Horny Toad HD that could save you some there.

I bought mine before the new ones came out, but if I was to buy one today , I'd buy the Rushmore TP. I think they look so much better and being more roomy is just a bonus.
If you plan on keeping the bike for a while, 4 bills really ain't that much. You can always remove it and use it on a new bike when the time comes too.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like you all like the 14 better.

Big Gary, I am planning on keeping my bike for a while, and I do agree that in the big picture $400 isn't that much if you are getting a quality product that is more user-friendly than the 13 tour pak.

You'll be very happy with the new style TP and will forget about the extra cost once you have it. I don't know what you are paying for the primed TP but if you are not getting a good discount it would be worth your wile to contact Jon and just see if it saves you some dough. He is a forum member here by the name of PCpain. Shoot him a PM and see. Good luck and don't forget to post some pics when it's done. ?

This seems to be the thread I want.
I am going to add the '14 king tour pack.
I will also be looking to add lights to it. Signal, brake, turn.
So, what wiring harness do I need?
what would I need to be able to use the '14 light bar on my '13 RG custom?
Has anyone eyeballed a '13 tour pack light bar to the 14 tour pack?

You will not be able to put a 13' light bar on a 14' tour pack. The shape of the TP is too different. You will not have trouble getting the 14' light bar to work on your 13'. Lights do not care how the get their power. So they can run with the new can bus system or the old electrical system. Many have done it and they work just fine. You will just need the right plug to fit the connection under the seat.

get the 14 TP , one less thing you'll need to buy when you do change bikes ..

i have a 15, and want a pack. i would buy the king, but i hate the rest pad with the side bolsters. and the chopped won't fit a full size helmet. - can i use a chopped rest pad on the king ??
voodoo bikeworks in AZ makes a lid for a chopped pack that is higher in the middle...
Aggressor Tour Pak - Tour Pack Top - Bagger Parts
and you can buy the lower half from them too, but i am guessing this is the - up to 13 style ?? i can't tell.

I bought the king tour pak and put the chopped pad on out. Since mine is Black Quartz, I went to Lowe's and got 4 of those black snap in hole filler buttons that fit perfect. You don't even notice they are there where the big wrap around would bolt on to. The misses likes the back pad too.

I have the chopped pad on my 14' King TP. I too have the plugs in the outer holes where the wrap around pad would bolt on but if you have to get yours painted it wouldn't be a big deal at all to have the painter fill the holes before paint. I should have had my painter fill the holes but at the time I wanted to leave the holes in case my wife ever wanted to switch to the wrap around pad. You will also have to drill new holes for the chopped pad. I believe I read somewhere that someone was able to buy a King TP bottom and a chopped TP lid seperately. Might want to check with PCPain to see if that is possible.

Finally got my tour pack that I purchased back in November painted. 2014 tour pack and bracket, mounted to 2013 docking hardware. Nice tight fit, with no bounce that some forum members reported with the detachable docking system. Glad I took you all's advice and got the 2014.
Painter did a great job and the color match is perfect.

Relocated the stock antenna under the seat, like so many others have done. No noticeable lost reception.

I am retiring this summer, after 44 years working in the steel industry, getting my bike ready for some extended touring, so this tour pack will get plenty of use.

I used extra antenna wire and routed it from the bracket near the fender up into the Tour Pack. That way, when I take the pack off, I can take the attenna off and screw it back in its original place.

That makes me envious.
