J&M 7.25 speaker problem - blown?

20116 Views 75 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  Peewee
I noticed today that it looks like the cone part of my right hand speaker is flattened. Its also staticy and almost sounds blown any point over half volume. I checked with several CDs, thinking it might just be a bad burned disc, but it happened on all of them. It was fine and the cone was never messed up before,.. but have noticed it in the past couple of rides it looks like its getting flatter. The static noise just started today. Doesnt make any sense because the grill is intact. The only thing I have done recently, was add the J&M amp. I plan to contact J&M about it, but wondered if anyone else has had any problems with their 7.25's yet. Its a bummer and I hope I don't have to send it in and wait for them to send me a replacement. Im so used to kick ass sounding speakers now, I could never go back to stock ever.

I think he must of been playin a little muskrat love and blew um up
I like the Terrible Ted quote,"This Guitar refuses to play Sweet Shit!" Double Live Gonzo Baby.
You gotta wonder...this guy is selling a pair...PAIR of $280 speakers, then an adminstrator of a popular website clearly blows one of them in the correct application....speakers that are nearly new, and he asks to send both in instead of just sending out TWO...yes TWO brand new speakers and then saying "send back the old ones in the same box".

I was just going to buy J&M 7.25's......this just made my descison final to mount $69 Polks or something else and an amp and be money wise.
My guess is they want to check them to find why they failed. They are a new product. Mine still rock with the stock set up. Let us know how the $69 ones work for ya.
I am a little disappointed, when my 7.25" quit working all they would take back was the single defective speaker. Now, I am just waiting for the other speaker to quit so I can take off the fairing yet again to remove and send it in.

Yea I think I'm going for the 6.25 adapter rings and some good marine speakers like alpine or Polks something like that. Going with the 6.25 you have a better selection.

Thats exaclty what he said in his emails,. they want to check it out and see why it did what it did. I don't see how it could be anything I did, and I don't think that is what they are saying either,.. but I understand why they do it the way they do. They can't just start sending speakers out to people, and hope that they get "broken" ones back. If someone never sends them in, and is scamming them for speakers they have no way of pursueing them other then an email (which could be faked) and an address (which could be faked as well).

Im just glad that he is willing to do whatever it takes, even though I never sent in my warrenty registration. Which I should of done on my amp as well, but I plan on sending its warrenty card in with the speakers.

Yeah, he wants the entire speaker setup,.. grills, speakers everything. I need to email him again to clarify if he wants the adapters and all that stuff to, as I don't see any need to send all that in.
After reading tons of website chat, and this forum, this is the setup I just ordered for my 2011 RGU:

AMPLIFIER
ELF Audio E2125X Bridgable 2 Channel Amplifier: "Best Offer Price: $180.00"

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390247960036&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

FRONT SPEAKERS
Polk Audio db651 6.5" Coaxial Marine Grade Speakers: $59.84

Total: $338.03

Will wire up the system either as a 2ohm parallel, (all 4 speakers driven by the amplifier....but you lose Front to Rear FADE control).......

or, I might let the 2011 RGU SPEC (60W) HK head unit drive the new rear Polk 5-1/4 [email protected] 4ohm, and the ELF amplifier drive the Polk 6-1/2 front [email protected] 4ohm, to retain FADE control.

After seeing Zuppy51 (member here) YouTube video (although he has 6.5" speakers all the way around), I was impressed:

CHAINSAW

that doesn't make any sense.

but honestly, I've never heard of a speaker warranty.

okay, I have but, it would seem like a 1 year parts warranty.

before pioneer, speaker companies wouldn't help you out at all.

LAMA

one point, the infinity kappas are supposed to sound just a hair cleaner.

I copied your links into my ebay account, just in case I'm next. thanks

J&M is great about warrenty with their 2 year warrenty. I haven't read a single bad review about their customer service or denying a warrenty claim. Then again, I've only seen a handful of people with J&M products that have to be sent back in.

This experience still wouldn't change my mind though,.. these 7.25s ARE the best speaker out there. Ive tried all the others before on my Ultra (seriously,.. I had a buddy with an audio store - we tested a good 15-20 speakers), but the J&Ms can't be beat.
good to know.

my booms are just 'slightly better' no thump at all.
Infinity Kappas

HAD the J&M's 7.25's, now I have Infinity Kappa 62.9i's, 6 1/2", 2 way, 2 ohms. Super clear sound for 1/2 of the price.... I personally didn't care too much for the look of plastic grilles.

OK Chainsaw....have you sent the speakers in yet? Any update? Hope they come through in spades for ya.....

Not yet, Im waiting for some snow on the ground before I do it, as I still ride everyday. :D
well we now have snow here so you can go ahead and park it. You've done enough riding for one season any ways haven't you? LOL...thanks man I'm sure you'll let us all know how it goes...enjoy!
The high end drivers in my J&M's didn't last long all. I removed and reinstalled them when I had the grills painted, but they were fine then.

I'll be looking for some other speakers, but I intend to use the J&M grills because I like their painted appearance on Hester. I'll find something higher end and fabricate a suitable mount.

You will not be dissapointed with the Polk's.... They are great speakers I have 6 of the db's in my car and I push them with 100 watts rms to each speaker. Just my .2 cents = give them polks all the power you can. They sound better as you get them louder (after proper break in) so be prepared to be deaf.

Im always +1 for Polk. I have 2 sets of compnent 6 1/2's and 2 6x9's sitting in my garage waiting for lowers and rockin tops. I will be running two amps for all 6 speakers. I will do a full write up when I get it finished.

Good luck with your tunes.

didn't you pull the mids and tweeters apart to paint the grills? I wonder if their performance was compromised. Great look with the red grills though.
I finally got my speakers sent back to J&M for testing. Turn around was just over a week from the day I sent them, to the day they came back. It was actually kinda funny, I sent my seat to Mean City the same day I sent the speakers, and they both showed back up the same day.

Anyhow, the one was replaced for sure that had the melted looking part on it. I put it right back in the right speaker hole to see if it happens again. The other one I believe might be the left one I sent in,.. the box on it said tested 2 ohms. It looks brand spanking new though so if it was my old one they cleaned it up nice. Either way, I don't think anything was wrong with my left one,.. just the right one.

In conclusion, I haven't had a chance to test it on the highway,... but I think they are louder now. It could be because I haven't heard them in a couple of weeks, or it could be because I took off that Hogtunes Hog pod (if thats possible to gain power that way). Either way, Im back to sounding really REALLY good, and Im super happy with J&M. By making a great product, then standing behind it has made me a return customer and I don't plan on switching. For the money, J&M's 7.25 and 250w amp setup can't be beat.
Thanks John for your help, and making such a great product for the road glides. Now Im patiently waiting until you release that 500w setup to think about stepping up to that

Ok got one for ya, have you run just the 7.25 without an amp.? Do ya need the amp? dose the amp. make that much of a diff. I was wondering also if that hog tune was drawing from your setup, was going to past that way back when, By the way your ride is lookin great.
