J&M 7.25 speaker problem - blown?

20116 Views 75 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  Peewee
I noticed today that it looks like the cone part of my right hand speaker is flattened. Its also staticy and almost sounds blown any point over half volume. I checked with several CDs, thinking it might just be a bad burned disc, but it happened on all of them. It was fine and the cone was never messed up before,.. but have noticed it in the past couple of rides it looks like its getting flatter. The static noise just started today. Doesnt make any sense because the grill is intact. The only thing I have done recently, was add the J&M amp. I plan to contact J&M about it, but wondered if anyone else has had any problems with their 7.25's yet. Its a bummer and I hope I don't have to send it in and wait for them to send me a replacement. Im so used to kick ass sounding speakers now, I could never go back to stock ever.

The big brown truck just dropped my J&M box off on Thursday - it's under the Christmas Tree awaiting installation. :D

All my other parts are due in on Monday! :) :)
Ok got one for ya, have you run just the 7.25 without an amp.? Do ya need the amp? dose the amp. make that much of a diff. I was wondering also if that hog tune was drawing from your setup, was going to past that way back when, By the way your ride is lookin great.

I ran the speakers without any amp for a month, maybe 2. I wouldn't say the amp is needed, but I just got a lot of distortion once the volume was up over half to 3/4. The amp totally took the distortion out, and its clear all the way up to full volume. The amp also made a big difference in sound, and was worth the money. I like my systems loud, so I can entertain the guys riding with me that don't have speakers. :)
haven't priced it out yet

Just like the handlebars, I read look and listen, i was liken your bars but didn't want to chance it on chrome. I was ready to start looking into the j&m's until I saw your post and wanted to see how it played out. Merry Christmas, man
I understand and I do the same thing when buying products in doing a lot of research and reading reviews.
My experience is, only buy speakers that are made for motorcycles. Car audio speakers are not made to handle the abuse, and I have tried and test a lot of car speakers on bikes. I never had a car speaker last for more then 1 season, and I tried everything from cheap wal-mart bought Sony speakers, clear up to high end Polk, infinity and Powerbass speakers. Also take into consideration, I have talked with most of those companies directly in person at SEMA about my application. Everytime, the reps would tell me its not a good idea to put their speakers on a motorcycle. One company it was the president I talked to directly (powerbass), and he agreed that only marine grade would be an option. Im kind of off subject, but yet not really. The reason I was at SEMA, is I painted/airbrushed and help build a Scion for RCA Mobile's first trip to SEMA. Since they were new to car audio, they didn't really have any opinions on speakers for a motorcycle at the time. And believe me, after spending 8 days with the RCA guys, I got to know them fairly well and the subject was brought up more then once.
I haven't had the chance to hear a hawg wired setup in person, as their equipment is rather pricey and few riders in my area spend lots of money on things like audio equipment. I've read some reviews that says its better/louder but I can't say because I don't know. So in my book, J&M is still the best thing out there.
In the end, it may just be that Im to hard on speakers. I listen to my music cranked up, and I don't baby my stuff. I ride in rain, I ride when its 30 degrees, and Ill ride when its 110 in the shade. Thats the way it is where I live so I expect my equipment to be able to handle it. I'm just glad to see a company, J&M, stand behind their equipment and do it in a timely manner with no hoops to jump through. Im proud to say I have their equipment in my bike, and hopefully I won't have any more problems in the future. But if I do, you guys know Ill be the first to jump up and say something about it :D

Those 7.25's are the worst thing I ever put on my Road Glide! Sounds like an old a.m. transistor radio. Or like your listening to music through a telephone. I had them in since last year and am doing some research now on what to replace them with

Id be checking to see if you have them installed/hooked up correctly. The reason being, I have no complaints, and every single person who has heard my speakers are amazed at how well they sound. Something is not right if you think it sounds like your listening to music through a telephone.
Can I chime in here a sec?,...
I've got a chance to hear these speakers and I was very impressed w/them.They are a Different sounding speaker, as to the fact that I'm saying, its like, if you have ever heard a "Loud Speaker" (Public Address).
Speakers I have or had, are Biketronics Titan -Hertz 6.5's. When I first bought my set-up that I've got Hawg-Wired, 150 watt amp, and 5-1/4 speakers, I updated to a 6.5" speaker. Speakers I updated w/were the older model Titan-Hertz, and now there is a "High-Energy" Titan Hertz, which sound TOTALY different than the older models.
My buddy went to sturgis this year and has a 08 Ultra. He came back w/4-J&M 7.25 speakers in his Ultra. My 2 speakers and amp were not as loud as his 4 w/no amp.
So, not to loose the point here but the J&M sound more like a "Loud-Speaker" to me. Its hard to compare in terms xcept the only way I can describe it is like a JBL compared to a Peavey. 2 totaly different Animals.
Hope this helps sumbody.

Exactly! They are loud, don't get me wrong. They just don't have any depth or deep rich sound to them. They're ok and I can hear them at 80 mph but the sound QUALITY just isn't there.

I was running the Hawg Wired double shot 150w amp and speakers 5 1/4 in my Classic and I parked within 20 yards of the J & M Trailer at Daytona and went back and forth between the 2 and my Hawg Wired system sounded way better than the J & M 7.25 and 250 w amp, I think these companies lie when they rate amps power because I see this all the time, a supposedly lower watt amp kicking a stronger amps ass, any way I was so unimpressed with J & M that I ordered for the Glide from Frank at Drago's the Hawg Wired 4 in the face 300w amp and 4 speakers, when I get it installed I'll give an update

I have them in the inner part of my outer fairing. They came with the package. Bottom line is the quality of sound coming out of these speakers isn't really that good. Again, they are loud, but just lack that quality sound. Some people love them but to my ears I think I can do better. Might try hog tunes.

Your going backwards there,.. HogTunes is not much of a step over stock. You would be better going with HD Boom then Hogtunes.
Love my J&M's

I hope you got the right match of ohms for your unit. They have 2,4 and 8 ohm speakers you know and if you don't match 'em right it will sound like crap no matter what.
I love my J&M's!:D
I admit I have not listened to any high end systems on my bike so I am asking because I don't know, but can you guys really distiguish a quality sound at 80mph on a bike?

Man, to tell you the truth, I don't know. It's been over a year. I wanna say 2. I bought them from Dr. V-Twin. Told him I had an 09 RG and this is what he sent out. They are plenty loud enough, just not the quality of sound that I thought $250 speakers would sound like.

I did a ton of research when I bought my 2001 Classic, back then many of these stereo companies were not around, I put a McIntosh 60W 2 channel car amp in my saddle bag and JB Quartz 5.25" speakers in my fairing and it blew away anything I've heard to date, later as these companies develop product I wanted my saddle bag back so I started looking at plug and play units, I went to rallies and listened to what people had, mainly J & M, Biketronics and Hawg Wired, I thought all 3 companies brought something to the table but for me based on volume and clarity I liked Hawg Wired best, but the problem with comparing systems is all our bikes are not the same, I have friends who run quiet exhaust systems and tall shields, they are happy with stock systems, give them better speakers and they have more than they need, I am at the other end of the spectrum, I run a stroked motor, loud pipes, 6" shield and ride with no helmet, so what one guy likes I can't hear, when asking for comparisons you really need to look at guys that have similar bike set ups as you and see what they use and if they are happy, there is no need to over buy if you don't need it or spend money and find out it doesn't work

Great point TJ316. I was very happy with my Hogtunes with no amp until I changed from a stock shield to a KW 12". Now I think I need something more.
The right speaker made it 5 months,.. its starting to melt again on the cone. Not sure what the problem is, but I emailed John at J&M again to see if he has any ideas.

I like my speakers, and like the way they sound,.. but this is gonna get old sending my speakers in every 5 to 6 months. Lets see if he replies to me, or ignores me this time :) I no longer have a warrenty card to send in, because I already used it the last time. I sure hope he doesn't tell me Im up shit creek, as new speakers are not in the budget and won't be for a while.
