J&M 7.25 speaker problem - blown?

20118 Views 75 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  Peewee
I noticed today that it looks like the cone part of my right hand speaker is flattened. Its also staticy and almost sounds blown any point over half volume. I checked with several CDs, thinking it might just be a bad burned disc, but it happened on all of them. It was fine and the cone was never messed up before,.. but have noticed it in the past couple of rides it looks like its getting flatter. The static noise just started today. Doesnt make any sense because the grill is intact. The only thing I have done recently, was add the J&M amp. I plan to contact J&M about it, but wondered if anyone else has had any problems with their 7.25's yet. Its a bummer and I hope I don't have to send it in and wait for them to send me a replacement. Im so used to kick ass sounding speakers now, I could never go back to stock ever.

Hope it works out for you chain... glad I got rid of my J&M's and went with the Hertz Hi Energys...
John replied to me right away, and said he would take mine in on trade for a set of Rokkers,.. I haven't heard back on what he will give me credit for mine though.
He said its because Im pushing them to hard, and listening to them to long with distortion, which you don't notice on the highway. It makes sense, as lately with the shorter windshields Im running, and the wind noise I crank it up and turn the AVC on which I guess J&M advises against for the plain 7.25s. The Rokkers are made to withstand more punishment, so I hope its not to terrible expensive to trade these in on a pair.

So if and of you have a new product and want to find out real world experience and honest feedback, send it to me :) I don't baby anything and if there is a weak spot I'll find it. :D
Wonder how the Rokkers will compare in sound/durability ? Does the AVC make it loader then just turning it all the way up manually ? I allways had my AVC on and all the way up. Works well for me. I'm running HogTunes 5x7"s and their 32 watt amp. Sounds good at 90+mph. I was concidering the J&M 7.25 speakers but might just wait until I hear back from you on the Rokkers.

Its strange but I will try to describe it. With my setup,.. stock head unit, 250w J&M amp and 7.25's with no AVC its good till about 70 MPH on a nice day with no wind. However if your driving faster, or have a cross wind I put 2 bars on the AVC, and to me its like doubleing the power with 2 bars. I can hear the music fine clear up to 90 mph. Thats with no helmet, just a bandana around my head or a beanie on to keep the tangles out of the hair. Im also running a 14" cee baileys shield now, which I can tell the wind noise is more as compared to a 16" and 17" I was running prior. With the 17" I never had to use the AVC, even at speeds of 90 mph+. Now its on almost all the time, because the bike runs perfect at 80-85 and the 14" looks to good to take off.

If you would have offered that 24 years ago I would have sent her out before I said "I do" just to work some of the bugs out.
I bought a set of J&M 7.25s back in Dec 09 when I bought my bike, they had just came out. Mine are wired to a Hawgwired amp, and sound much better than the Hawgwired 5.25" speakers that I originally had. I have had no problem with my speakers and I play them all the time. I talked with John from J&M and he has told me if I come to Biketoberfest he'll upgrade mine to the Rockers and install them at cost, if I decide I like them better. I've had J&M products before and haven't had many problems, any problems I have had have been taken care of.

I've learned that no matter how long you test drive one before the "I do" there are always problems that seem to creep up after you buy it. :D

John is a good dude, and I have nothing bad to say about J&M. He emailed me back today with what they would give me for trade in, and its very fair. So I will be pulling these and trading them in for a set of Rokkers. I still think the 7.25's are good speakers, and I think they have a high success rate among most users. However there are a few of us, that push the limits of equipment and tend to break stuff :)

I have a set of Rokkers on order and I'll be running them with my 32 watt Hog tunes amp. I have the regular 7.25s in my wifes SG with no amp and it really sounds good at speed. With an amp they should really shine.

I ran the 7.25's with no amp for a month or two before adding the amp. From what I've read, the difference between the regular 7.25's and the rokker 7.25's is about like adding another amp. Not really in power, but less distortion all the way up to full volume.

I plan on calling J&M tomorrow to get the rokkers coming. That way I only have to pull the fairing off once and have the job done in an hour. Then send these back to them for credit.

RedDog Please update me when you get those rokkers installed. Are you currently running the 32 watt amp and 5x7 Hogtunes speakers now ?

I have the older 5.25" HT speakers with the HT Amp. I found the Rokkers on Ebay for $266 shipped and according to UPS will be at my house Thursday. I'll put them in Friday and hopefully get some ride time in over the Weekend to give you my thoughts. What sold me on the J & Ms is on my wife's SG you can crank them to 80-90% without distortion...and the Rokkers are supposed to be even more stable. Should give me some really clear tunes at speed...I hope.
Update. - 5/18/11
Got the Rokkers today, and they look awesome. Got them installed, but just waiting to find out what adjustments to make to my amp before I put the fairing back on and hear them.
I also have to correct myself, as the 7.25's that were in the bike were not melted or overheated like I had thought. I could of sworn the right one looked that way, but once I got it out from behind the grill, it looks perfect. I did 400 miles today, and they (the original 7.25's) never skipped a beat. So Im still upgrading to the rokkers, but just letting everyone know that I didn't fry 2 sets of speakers after all. J&M stands behind their products, and John has done a great job answering my questions and making it right with the customer. I would still reccomend J&M's products and have nothing but good things to say about their customer service.

I will update once the 250w amp is adjusted for the rokkers on their performance.
Holy sheep shit batman,. these Rokkers really do rock!! They are a huge improvement over the standard 7.25 speakers by leaps and bounds. The bass is now there. Its not hard thumping like a subwoofer, but at least its present now. Turn up the volume to full with the 250w J&M amp, and have no distortion and enough sound to wake the neighbors. Im super happy and really impressed at what a difference the speakers made. I know this is starting to sound like an infomertial, but seriously.. if you haven't heard the rokker setup, find someone with one and give a listen before buying anything else.

I'm a happy camper :D
So how bout you and the Dragon Slayer boogie on over to Shark Week and give us a listen?!?!

Wish I could,.. got a busy summer and only so much cash to spend. Maybe next year shark week will be closer to my area so I can attend.
I'm glad to hear this! I'm looking at swapping the Polk's out of my lower fairing for the Rokker's!
