I recently just installed a new head unit that had a RMS of 22watts per channel..when you run this thru an amp , is that extra 22 watts used or once it goes thru the amp is it just lost and nothing extra is added to the amps output.

Once it goes to the amp, the amps rms is all you have. You don't add. Actually if your HU has the capability, you turn off the HU internal amp and connect to the external amp vai low level input.
