This is the first time that I have had to post something here. I usually read posts and get ideas but have never had a problem until now. So thank you in advanced for all of the members and info here that I have had the opportunity to read. I am not expecting any quick fix answers, maybe just some insight if someone else had a similar issue. I have to take it to my dealer for the work since I dont know what is happening. Now for the breakdown on the issue.

Recently my 2012 Road Glide Ultra has been running hot after about a half hour of riding. At low idle the motor starts to stall, the oil pressure drop almost to zero. Then I hear a different sound from the engine, lots of knocking when at cruising speed. The exhaust sound is different also, louder but different. I have only put on about 200 miles this year. I usually change the oil at the end of the season. So my first thought was a bad oil filter causing low pressure. I did an oil change and filter. The oil looked very dark almost burnt. There was a slight burnt smell. After the oil change I went for a ride. When I got home after riding I sat in the garage at idle in first gear. It started to drop idle speed and almost stop. I had to rev it to keep it running. Again low oil pressure. I am using syn Harley oil and filter.

Little more info. How many miles on the engine? Do you feel like you are hearing a lifter breaking down or a more solid knock like a bad compensator sounds. (Not saying it is that, just the hard knock sound like that). When you changed the oil, did you cut open the filter and look for debris? How about the oil plug? How much metal on the magnet? All of these things are very important. It's like one begats the next. Like a bad lifter then it eats up the oil pump. Look forward to hearing your answers.

14700 miles on the bike.

The knocking was loud from the front of the bike and sounded almost like gas knock from bad gas or low octane. I always use 93 octane.

I did not cut open the filter. I still have it and can so i will do that. No metal shavings on the oil plug. I did check it carefully.

I do have an extended warranty that expires March 2017 so that is a positive for repair costs.

My wife and I have our first big trip. Wyoming and Montana by way of South Dakota the last week of July. So I hope to have it fully taken care of well before that.

Hey there,

It sounds like the same problem I would have with my 2012 RGU when it got hot. Lot's of traffic right around where I live and just 15 minutes sitting or crawling in traffic would drive the engine temp up. Once that happened I would start hearing the pinging sound you describe.

Mine would clear up once I was able to drive at a decent speed for maybe 20-30 minutes depending on the outside temperature. This issue is the main reason I started looking at the 2016 with the wet head and since purchased it.

The near stalling and pinging drove me nuts and I'm sorry to say I never found a way to resolve it. I was thinking of replacing the head pipe with a de-catted one which I'm sure would help but the 2016 looked too good :)

As a side note which I forgot to mention. One thing that would help although not resolve the problem was to always use 93 octane gas. While many stations call 91 their premium it made the heat issue much worse.

I've read on here that a good rich tune will drop engine temp by ~ 20 degree's but I never did a stage 1 on the Bike so can't be sure.

I run 60wt oil in my bike with a high performance oil pump my bike is at 10lbs on hot days idling i dont worry about it

My oil pressure goes back to normal when the RPMs go up. Even though the pressure went back up with the RPMs I was still concerned that the oil was so dark after such a short time. I only rode the bike 3 times up to about 200 miles. The oil looked like end of season oil. Can oil turn that dark after such a short time?
I have it scheduled to be looked at in a week. An engine specialist is scheduled to look at it. Thank God for extended warranties.

So as it turns out, newer bikes have an Engine Idle Temperature Management System. Something I did not know about. It will shut off one of the cylinders until the motor cools down. It can be programmed into the bike through the radio or the ignition switch, depends on models. Now that I have this info from my dealer I find it all over the web. Who knew. Thank you all for the input on this thread.
