Finally pulled the trigger on a Madstad. The set up of my glide is a 2013 Custom, stock handlebars, and a Mustang Super Touring seat Part Number: 79556, additionally I am 5'10" with a 32 inch inseam. I decided to purchase a Madstad for the comfort of my better half, based on all the reviews on this site (warning not to become a shield collector). With the stock toenail shield, she was constantly complaining that her neck was sore because her head was getting whipped around over 50 mph.
Based on Madstad's website I ordered a 13 inch extra dark smoke. It took roughly two weeks to arrive due to equipment problems at Madstad, no problem good things come to those who wait, even though I was checking the UPS status multiple times a day once the shield shipped. Yesterday the shield arrived however, as I was installing it, I was recalled to work (military). Arriving home around 9 I had to finish the install and see what all the buzz was about. I took the advice of a forum member and ordered new well nuts with the shield, good thing, mine were thrashed at only 3,000 miles. I used Chainsaws method for well nut installation and success. Mounted the outer shield and off I went into the night. It was a little hard for me to see through the shield, but all I can say is that this shield is legit, all the positive reviews you read on the forum are true.
Some of the problems I encountered so far was a whistling at 40 to 50 mph, taking the advice of some forum members I replaced the Madstad trim with the stock trim, problem solved, the Madstad trim was causing a 16th inch gap between the fairing and base plate. I probably slouch a little too much, but for me the 13 inch is on its lowest setting and is roughly at my eye level, perhaps its the seat as well. The dark tint also makes it tough to make out the Massachusetts pot holes on the way to work in the morning and on the way home in the evenings. So for now, I will ride with the base plate and brackets, give Mark a call, return my outer shield, and patiently await the arrival of a 11 inch medium gray outer shield. More to follow....
