I'm starting to piece together an audio upgrade for this winters project. I've decided to do an amp and 2 speakers in the fairing. I have no intention on ever adding speakers to lids or lowers.
A pbr 300x2 amp is all I have so far. I'm leaning towards the Kappa speakers, but have some concerns about them fitting with stock grills?
Will these fit with aftermarket grills?(Hogtunes etc)
I was convinced that I'd go with a magic box as opposed to a download, after reading all the nightmares guys were experiencing with dealer downloads. Now Biketronics has a something equivalent to the magic box. From what I've been reading, it is better ( sound ). So,........ Biketronics is the way to go????? or chance a download???? Which download???? I'm quite certain my dealer won't be of any help.
Any input on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

justposts,,,,,,,

yes ,,, We can do things with J&Ms computers, that even the Harley dealers now cannot do ,,,,,

I use a special tuning software program from DiagBike ,,,, and to un-complicate things for the general dealer/customer, DiagBike is going to add a special J&M/Harley FLASH selection to it's software menus ,,,,,,,,

and in MY experience, I think that it IS the best FLASH available for the Harley Infotainment radio for use with a non-Harley brand amplifier ,,,,,, and I have literally heard ALL of the Harley digital technician's software FLASH options, every combination possible ,,,,,,,,

complete details below ,,,,,, on this special J&M/Harley FLASH ,,,,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This special J&M/Harley Infotainment radio FLASH will lower the output of the radio itself, flatten out the internal EQ settings, activate the plug-in rear output channels, activate front/rear fader control, maintain Bass/Treble/AVC controls & optimize the overall output signal ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, for use with J&M ROKKER & Performance series amplifiers, along with most other non-Harley brand amplifiers.

These special Infotainment radio FLASH settings will NOT be affected in the future by the periodic Harley radio updates performed thru the USB thumb drive port.

J&M will also custom tune your J&M ROKKER or Performance series amplifier kit for this special J&M/Harley radio flash, if purchased at the same time and return ship back all together, for a total plug-n-play no-hassle installation.

J&M can also FLASH the 2006-2013 Harley HK radios for 4 speakers, enhanced EQ and activate the front/rear fader control.

The cost for this J&M/Harley radio FLASH service is $75.00.

To take advantage of this unique service, ship your radio to: J&M Corporation, 1415 S. Cherry Ave., Tucson, AZ 85713 ,,,,, Attn: J&M Service ,,,,,,,,, and make sure to include your eMail address & phone number inside the package with the radio.

I'm in the market for a upgrade to the stereo for my 2016 Road Glide Ultra. I have been studying various manufactures J&M being on of them.

To be honest I'm not thrilled with the ideal of pulling my $1,850.00 head unit out of my new ultra and shipping somewhere through USPS, UPS or Fed-Ex to get it flashed.

JMJohn, I'm sure your company is reputable but we all know how ham fisted these shipping company's are and the limits to how much they will insure.

It would to seem to me that since the software is loaded through a USB port there would be much safer and less expensive ways to get the software update into the system. A custom tailored USB drive or a blue tooth app with the correct setting for the system being purchased.

If you wanted to keep everything in house you could use something like GoToMyPC. The customer connects the device to the bike and your tech connect to the head unit through the internet and complete the changes required.

There got to be a better way then shipping the head unit to you and shipping it back.

Just use the magic box or the one biketronics offers all you need is to clean up the signal coming from the head unit.if you were to talk to the tech service at either company they can explain. Very simple.69.00 all set not a bad word about either of these units.

I like the "GoToMyPC" idea.
Shipping for me is also a concern. Not only for the reasons you mentioned, but because I'm in southern Ontario. Cross border shipping costs , both ways are just too expensive!

If J&M did a download , and for some reason the head unit crapped out. Would the factory warranty be void? I know up here, they can get quite sticky on aftermarket add ons , downloads , etc, when it comes to covering anything under warranty.

Guys ,,,,,,,

the Harley radio FLASHES" can only be done thru the side port of the motorcycle with either the Harley digital technician OR J&Ms special cables etc ,,, working thru the DiagBike software programs ,,,,,

it CANNOT be done thru the USB port inside the fairing compartment ,,,,

that is the issue ,,,,,

I don't understand why the radio would need to flashed when using, line converter like Magicbox or the new Biketronics unit?????

When a line converter is used the radio has no IDEA an amp is in place. Your modifying the signal after the radio sends it out to the speakers. Like Dozer and myself, plus many others, just use a line converter of your choice and enjoy the improved sound.

I'm running 4 speakers with one amp zero problems from the aftermarket components, the factory headunit is another issue.

Sometimes things are made to be way over complicated when they don't have to be.

Sure a line leveler will work... the magic box works... but its not optimum. Here is why...

The DSP within the factory head units have EQ curves that vary the output thru BASE/TREBLE as well as VOLUME control. The idea and goal behind the FLASH for aftermarket amps is to get the FLATTEST EQ CURVE possible across the volume range. Ever notice with AVC ( Auto Volume Control ) that the faster you go, the more base you lose and the treble goes way up with the volume? Even with AVC turned off... as you increase the volume, base goes away and treble is prominent. That is the EQ CURVE you are trying to flatten. The Flash is the the ONLY WAY to do it thru Digital Technician.

When you run a line leveler of any type... you are just reducing the output signal of the HU to a suitable level ( low level ) to run to an amp... but the signal is still amplified internally via the DSP and will increase output with volume, lowering your base output and turning up the treble... thus amplifying and amplified signal with an aftermarket amp. This is when you get distortion WAY before you should.

Again.... they work... but not as good as the correct flash... which in some cases can be mind-boggling.

Here is an example of the BEFORE AND AFTER a flash EQ Curve.....

Interesting point you made for sure. I'm thinking then from what you have posted, one could run an aftermarket amp without a line converter with this flash or still better yet use a line converter too.

I agree that the signal would be flat and that's a better sound to amplify.

But from what I have installed it sounds pretty good, could it be better, sure.

Maybe down the road some day I'll have it flashed to clean things up even more, but for now and probably a lot of us we just want to be able to hear the dam thing above 40 mph.

Thanks for the info, it was something I didn't know.

Knowledge is always welcome.

AVC can be turned off.... and should with an aftermarket amp. This doesn't change the fact that when you increase your volume manually, the same thing happens... bass goes down and treble goes up and DSP is controlling the output signal in relation to the EQ curve within the volume range.... that's the issue you try to FIX with the flash.

Spazz ,,,,,,

please take no offense, but I disagree ,,,,

the special J&M Harley radio FLASH is THE BEST I have heard, whether sitting still or on the highway ,,,, full volume or half volume, regardless of speakers used or brand/model of amplifier used ,,,,, and this special FLASH can only be performed thru the port under the left rear sidecover ,,,,,

SECOND BEST is the STOCK HARLEY FLASH with J&Ms specially built RCA input harnesses with the green bands, and a properly adjusted J&M ROKKER or Performance Series amplifier ,,,,,,

and I hate to sound like an authority all the time, but I have listened to hundreds of these bikes now, with many other brand systems that we remove, just like we are doing here at LONESTAR rally this weekend ,,,, and it is always the same ,,,,

You don't sound like an authority. You sound like a salesman who listens to a lot of sub-par systems. I have listened to JM's top systems at your booth and i can confidently say my bike sounds way cleaner and louder than anything you have to offer. The difference is I know my system isnt even close to the best system out there and was almost half the price.
