My 103 Build

I think I'm pretty close to finalizing my build, opinions welcomed.
CVO 103 heads, round combustion chamber with a nice chamfer - came out at 93cc's.
Cometic MLS .030 head gaskets.
SE flattops
The crank that came in the kit came in under 1 thou. .6 in the truing stand.
SE hyd cam upgrade plate and oil pump.
RedShift 575's intake closing at 41* / .053 duration 242* / .575" valve lift.
B148 inner cam bearings, SE lefty crank bearing, Heard of several nightmares with the SE timkin conv. kit and for this mild street motor the roller will do.
T-Max will E-mail me a new map on this receipe.
Re-using my Bub7 TD's.
@ 1200' I have a corrected comp. of 8.72:1 and a ccp of #172.
Had comp.releases machined in anyways and thinking it should be allright with some of the methanol/suspect gas we encounter in the States.

Bottom end is getting done at the local dealer, whom I brought the shortblock to, and the rest in my shop since I got time till spring and now that I'm older, a lot more patience for checking clearances and plastiguaging piston to valve clearance instead of wanting to do a burnout as soon as I threw it together!

The RedShift cam is a little off main stream but a Woods 6H is almost double the cash and their single link conversion with plate or gear drive with Feuling oil pump  The 575 almost equals those specs and I'm hoping a little quieter valvetrain and the Harley conversion billet plate with pump seems a pretty good deal.
I don't see any SE cams I'm that fond of, 253's sitting on the bench some of the Andrews N grinds maybe, but I thought to keep it all in the family with Zippers and see what kind of map they can build for their cam and support....

Wild combustion chamber differences between stock and the early SE 103 heads. I can see the bathtub shape on the original heads but the SE's look like my Shovelhead 'cept with a chamfer edge. I really don't want to mill the SE head cause I assume the chamfer is the squish?? I've heard these are still good heads and are the design basis of the newer models?
Got the hybrid camplate and it looks to be a nice piece of kit, now where the Hell are my cams............

Upon inspecting parts for cleaning and reassembly, I find this on the front rocker arm. First the stator and now this, the joys of the unforseen expenses in a buid, Oh well I knew there would be some just a question of what and how bad!
At least the bottom end held no suprises.....

Ahh, the Devil is in the details - after 6 e-mails and me saying send a set of RS 575's up, I got informed they have none and no production for a while due to holidays, but this is the kicker - I have to grind out some webbing on my early case... Nothing like saying something earlier, in previous e-mails - when my cases where split! I don't care what you can tape off, I'm not having flying bits of metal around my fresh bottom end.... Got a little pissy and hit town to see who had what, this time of year forget about it. So a little head scratching and here is the new deal SE 204's with SE 1.725 rockers, lift goes from .508 to .540 and a proven bolt in I could get my hands on. Whew thanks for letting me vent.......

Dak47,

The 204 is going to be a stump puller, but will tail off hard at about 4600 - 4800 rpm.

Did you happen to consider the Cycle Rama 575's or the Woods 555 or Andrews 48?
Yup I did Unbalanced, the Triple Nickel and the CR575 wouldn't fit the cam bearings in my 2003 engine case and I didn't want to wait for a Andrews to be shipped in. I thought the hi lift rockers should help a little and I'm mostly 2up on mountain roads, so it should work fairly well.....

Hows this for a kick in the bag, I have dealt with my local dealership for years mostly cause of the parts guy. I have bought all my motor parts thru them and I know one of the wrenchs in the back and he pulls me out a engine stand of a pile of them in the corner, the tag hanging said HD reman. program.

Owner found out and flips, after a pretty good temper flare on my part I don't want to get the innocent in any more crap, I unbolt the damn thing and lovingly deposit it in the service dept. Someones  nose is outta joint cause they ain't making any money on the motor assembly.

Long story short, stopped by the job site and grabbed a lunch table and comandeered a spare storage room in the house and this is what I came up with good and solid too, screw them. I measured the old stand and took pictures and as soon as the bike is running I'm going to mig one up.

Sorry about the rant,
Dirk

Hard to believe this all started with, I'm gonna change the cams, check the shoes and crank runout......

The only way I could get the stroker kit for 1300 bones was with silver cyl's and heads. So I decided to copy my ol Sturgis Shovel's engine paint scheme. The 103 is just about ready to go back in where it belongs...

horror stories about the timken????? great I just put the timken on my 103". what kind of stories have you herd????
I don't want to start a oil type debate, but my info came from 2 different sources that I both respect. First I was talking to the owner of one of Vancouvers largest Harley speed shops and their drag racing history is famous, he said he will no longer put them in a street motor due to the six 10/32 screws and green locktite. He said one screw came out and went round in the mill and he found two seperate mills with loose ones.

I don't know if this was due to improper install methods, but he was quite adamant that you don't need them on a streetable motor, which was good enough for me when he showed some of the motors and #'s with just the upgraded lefty and making sure the flywheels where truly true.
Secondly I know the wrenchs at the dealership quite well (I hooked up their dyno) and the guy I was talking to indepentently backed up what I was told, he was also overheard by his service writer and got in a bit of hot water for saying what he did......

Lots of people due this conversion with great results and a stout bottom end, so feel good about yours and ride on......

Frick, am I a happy camper!

This mill just keeps feeling stronger as a few miles pile up, liking the whole 103 thing even though the build is mild at 2800 things start to move rather quickly and the needle is swinging past 4000 like right now :D and when you look to the side I like the velocity that the scenery is going by.
Compared to my twitchy 95 that I had to keep wound up tight all the time, this is going to be major fun this year, sorry for babbling - its just nice to wack the throttle and things move NOW without any fuss or muss!
