Hello to all. I guess since im a few weeks away from being home for good after a long long year in Afghanistan, im gonna go ahead and get a head start on my build blog/thread. The $10k budget came about last summer when I was shopping for a new Harley after nearly killing myself on my 2008 GSX-R 1000 for the umpteenth time. It got to the point to where I just didnt respect that bike anymore and I figure that if you have no respect for a 185 hp, 190 mph rocket that does 9's in the 1/4 mile and wheelies on demand, and constantly buzzing through freeway traffic at 150+ mph:eek: then its definitely time to let it go.

So, I went through a few different bikes as I was shopping, a 2008 Road King Classic and also a 2008 Street Glide, but found both of those bikes to be too expensive. As I was shopping, I was riding my uncles 2009 FLHTP police bike and fell in love with it. He also has a 2004 Road King and just traded his police bike for the street glide.

So, long story short, I went to get a police bike or a street glide and absolutely fell in love with the 2012 CVO "Skunk". I had came up with about $10k cash for down payment and actually put the bike on order. That lasted about 3 months until the old lady found out the cost and said there is no way I can justify paying more for a bike than I did her car (2010 Camry SE), and also that it would be stupid to spend $30k on a bike that I still would have to modify in order to get it the way I like it. So, back to the dealer and I absolutely fell in love with the bike I have now. So, that $10k price difference is where I got the $10k budget and this is where it all begins.

My goal for the bike was to upgrade the stock stereo because it sucks, upgrade the performance because these bike suck ass in stock form above about 4k rpm and also to upgrade the seat and the wheels. So far, I have collected parts and they are sitting in my garage waiting for my attention. The only parts that have been installed are the 4 pt. docking station/sissy bar and the Hells Foundry Ipod Dash. A lot of this stuff will be picked up on ebay and through the forums in order to get as much stuff as I can within the budget. With that frame of mind, I am also expecting to have some stuff that just wont be as described so we'll se on those items when the time comes. Without further ado, here is what I have so far and how much I have paid...

1. $150 Standard height sissy bar takeoff from 2009 road king off ebay
2. $100 4 point docking hardware brand new from same road king off ebay
3. $300 Hells foundry ipod dock dash brand new off ebay
4. $217 new takeoff CVO pipes from 2011 CVO RGU, ebay
5. $300 2012 FLHTP takeoff police seat assy, paid way too much, from ebay.
6. $370 J&M Rokker 500 watt amp, used once at bike rally, from ebay
7. $175 J&M Rokker road glide speakers from same bike above, from ebay
8. $220 Power Commander V, used from 2009 Road King, from ebay
9. $271 Power Commander V auto tune module, new in box, ebay
10. $160 Yaffe Skoowl Fairing, brand new, Yaffe website
11. $150 Wild 1 Chubby Bars mini apes 515, bought from forum member
12. $125 14" Cee Bailey Windshield, bough from forum member
13. $63 H-D Midframe air deflectors, surdyke.com
14. $25 H-D FLTR glove box liners, surdyke.com
15. $30 H-D FLTR updraft deflectors, surdyke.com
16. $55 H-D Repair manual for my 2012, surdyke.com
17. $57 H-D Logo soft lowers , surdyke.com
18. $48 H-D Air pump, surdyke.com
19. $32 SE Pushrod tube remove/install tool, surdyke.com
20. $16 SE Cam spacer kit, surdyke.com
21. $16 SE Magnetic lifter holder tool, surdyke.com
22. $16 SE 10mm Red spark plug wires, surdyke.com
23. $58 H-D Chrome/Rubber collection grips, large size, surdyke.com
24. $240 SE Heavy Breather Kit, chrome, surdyke.com
25. $132 SE Premium tapered adjustable pushrods, surdyke.com

My total so far is about $3,300. I still have to buy my cams, header pipe, passenger pillion for police seat, backrest for police seat, wheels, and some other upgrades. I will update the list as I get more stuff and will start the building and post pics as soon as I get home.:D

i think your wife is smart and you made the right choice. Even tho i like the CVO's i think 30k is too much since I would still have to spend 5k+ to get the tour pak and other stuff the way I want it. i did almost same as u except i bought a 2010 RGC with 3k miles on it. I have done $11k in mods for 7k on ebay and the forums. I LUV THIS BIKE. STILL GRINNIN' LIKE A 5 YEAR OLD ON CHRISTMAS MORNING AFTER 18K MILES.

yeah things always work out for the best when I listen to the old lady. i just picked up a set of TW-7h cams on brand new in box on ebay for $270 shipped, which is about a $100 savings over buying them at retail. i dont see a lot of people running those cams in 103s but i have done some research and it seems like they are identical to the se 255s in being a high torque cam except for they carry the torque out a whole lot farther. I definitely was looking for a high torque cam that would be a true "bolt in" and I didnt want to go with the SE 255 cause they run out so soon. I love to rev my bike and run it hard on the back roads and I love the feeling of the high torque and hopefully I have found what I am looking for with these Woods TW-7h cams. We'll see in a few weeks. So far, that brings my total cost to about $3,570 if im not mistaken and leaves me with aboout $6,500 left to spend on wheels, saddle speakers, extended bags, , header pipe, and a different rear fairing. I dont think im gonna be able to do everything I want and spend $10k, Maybe $7500-8k. Thats always a good thing in my book.:D

i dont know if you want my job brother. I make a ton of money but I spend more time on the road than I do home, hence the parts all sitting in the garage waiting on me. and yes $10k is a lot, however, i dont buy new cars like most folks do. i ride old schools and hand-me-down cars from my wife because riding is my true passion. i tell you this, i wouldnt dare spend $20k on a car for myself but wouldnt hesitate to spend that or more on a bike.:D

Same here for me bro I get the wife's hand me downs, she gets the new car, but I get the bike I want.

I however, couldn't pass on the skunk when I saw it in person.

Can't wait to see your build done.

well, the deal for the cams fell through so its back to the $3300 that I was at before. Im kinda glad that it did thought because I just cant seem to find any information on that TW-7h cam in a stock 103. I see a lot of them on various forums being used in hopped up 103s, but nothing stock. Oh well. By the way, thanks for the all the responses and definitely to Fire-Medic for the seats. Great guy to deal with and im looking forward to riding soon bro. And to the poster heading to Baghdad, good luck and have fun. I heard its contractor heaven over there now that all the soldiers are gone and they took their stupid rules with them. No offense to my fellow vets and former servicemembers but those rules got a little out of hand at times. Well, I will have updates soon, hopefully in the next few weeks. Got a quote on some custom RW wheels but I wont reveal the colors yet because im wanting to see the response I get when I post pics up on the forum. All I can say is that right now, you can get a set of 21/18 directly from their website for $1,940 shipped. Awesome price if you ask me. I just gotta convince the wife to let me order them now so they can be at the house when I get home. We'll see what she says, already gave me the go ahead but we gotta save a few more paychecks before I do but im so anxious. :D

update

so the deal for the cams is back on and they were shipped out to me yesterday. so that $270 brings the total up to $3570 spent so far out of the $10k budget. Also, I ordered the cam install kit from fuel moto for $63 shipped and got some good news to go with it. apparently, i shouldnt have a problem with that TW-7H cam in my stock 103 and Jamie will be emailing me a tune for that cam based on the TW-777 cams. He said that the TW-777 cams are an "updated" version of the TW-7H. so with the $270 cams, and $63 cam install kit, we have an estimated grand total so far of $3,633 which leaves about $6,400 left in the budget. Head pipe should be ordered within the next week and that will complete the stage 2 upgrade for now.

Great choice on the ride, good luck on the mods!
thanks alot bro. Picked up an HD Chrome Gear Shiift indicator brand new in the box for $170 and also got a custom ignition/timing cover for $63. that brings the total price up now to round about $3,900. I think the goals I have set are going to be very doable with the remaining budget. Im hoping to have enough left over for a 107 kit with port and polish heads and throttle body but we'll have to wait and see after all the "necessary" mods are done. I dont know if I can call any of this neessary but whatever.

Do you still need a rear pillion for your Cop seat? I have a Mustang rear pillion specifically for FLHP that I am going to put up on eBay...like new, perfect condition.

Sounds like you're off to a good start. I had a local dealer do most of my work; at your budget, you should be able to get everything done. One more year of Bagram, enough for some suspension mods, and I'm done !

Andrews 4* advance crankshaft/cam sprocket

Bagram huh? Thats where im at right now too. Small world. I have about 3-5 more weeks left and im done for good! I just picked up a +/- 4* cam gear/crankshaft sprocket on Ebay for $62.50 shipped. I bought it based on the recommendations of a few builders to use with the TW-7H cams. Its supposed to move the torque curve down about 200-300 rpm which would be perfect. Now that brings the total to $3,962. I'll just call it an even $4,000 cause im sure that I may have missed something so far.

Cobra Head pipes chrome

Just got one hell of a deal on a Cobra Power port head pipe. It was a scratch and dent item that is brand new in the box but has a few minor scratches on the curve going underneath and a small dent on the bottom of the heat shield. Both are barely visible. I paid $289 shipped to my door. Thats easily $100 savings. So that brings the total to im gonna round up to $4,300. More to follow...

New Update

Just picked up a passenger pillion for the police seat that im gonna install when I get home. Paid $110 for it and also, picked up a brand new pair of 5x7 Boom saddle lid speakers for $110 as well. That to me is an awesome deal because before I decided to buy them, i priced out the entire kit to include the speaker lids from H-D and the total with everything was $417 which is about a $120 savings vs. buying the speaker kit and the lids new online. So that brings the total to an estimated $4,500 spent so far. Once all the bills are paid for the month im gonna go ahead and get the rest of the stuff to do the saddle lid speaker upgrade and hook it all to the J&M Rokker 500w amp that I have with the Rokker road glide speakers I have in the front. More updates to follow.

Yo man, if you're still here, give me a shout 079-972-0053, we can grab some Green Beans coffee. Also have a dude here from the CVO Harley site (Mark/Ironhorse), good for get-togethers to talk bikes.
