Hello Suspension Gurus!

Wondering out loud here about the newer hand adjustable rear suspensions on the Roadglide Ultra. Asking for a friend who has just purchased a used low miles 2017 FLTRU.

Only the left shock is adjustable for pre-load.

1. Would there be any advantage in buying a set of stock take off shocks of the newer model and mounting the adjustable shock from the take off set upside down on the right side, therefore having the adjustable preload on both sides.
2. Would mounting the adjustable shock upside down affect it's function and longterm viability? Would it leak?
3. How robust is the shock, would being exposed to more road grime and brake dust shorten it's life?
4. Are these new shocks rebuildable?

Inquiring minds need to know!!!

Anybody got an opinion or shot in the dark as to why it wouldn't work? I think I know of one reason why it wouldn't work but won't spill the beans just yet.

Supposedly the right and the left shock are "integrated" but there is no physical connection between them and last time I checked, shock absorbers were not high on the list of items that need artificial intelligence and I am pretty sure they cannot sense to adjust pre-load themselves without some type of input.

Sorry, don't have an answer for you, but I do know that sometimes shocks come mounted upside down on one side. More than one person had run into this problem and had to flip it in order to install the 4-point docking do-dad. So I figure mounting it upside down is just fine. How-ever, where does that put the hand knob? Is it in the way of something? Can you get to it?

I have messed with my adjustable rear on my stock '15 RGS, it does help, made the girl a bit more comfy when hitting those bigger bumps, but have also wondered, why not be bale to adjust the other side as well?

I do plan on upgrading to Super Shox when my puny money collection allows me to.

Don't see any problem mounting the HD shock upside down if there's room. HD actually recommend it for a while to fit the dock. I also don't see the need to have 2 preload shocks ,since it only adjusting the spring that holding up the weight of the MC and rider and gear off the ground. Not enough weight to need 2. That's why the MOCO only uses one ,plus a good way to save $$.
I think all shocks are rebuildable if you got the equipment.
If you really want an answer, I know a guy. :)

Thanks for the replies gents.

I think i have figured out my answer with a little research.

1. For Harley to put the adjustment shock on both sides would require two shocks both with hand cranks but they would have to be mirror images of each other in order to fit properly. This would cost more to manufacture.
2. The single hand adjustable Harley shock probably cannot be fitted on the right side because the crank would interfere or contact the rear brake disc, no bueno.
3. Most higher end shock manufacturers, Ohlins, JRI, Supershox sell you a pair of adjustable shocks, not just 1 adjustable shock and then a regular shock to put on the other side that senses the adjustment of the adjustable shock.

I don't have these shocks and know even less about them. Were these shocks designed so that one shock controls the sag and the other controls the rebound? I believe some fork systems are like that. If so, would or could anything be gained with your scenario?

Hi. I removed my air shocks on my 2016 rgu fltru and bought the premium ride shocks. Much better ride quality and not too expensive but I find they are a little soft when the bike is fully loaded touring. I am 190 lbs and wife is only 125. So If you are heavier than us I would recommend looking at other options. Also if you run it hard like fast corners on highway over bumps I found dampening too slight. Which is not adjustable. I had spring maxed out. Still too soft . Sad because they are great for single rider. Apparetly one side controls spring rate and other shock controls dampening
