I rode the Dragon in June of 2005. It is 2110 miles from home to Deals Gap. I rode with 2 good friends that ride EG's. Kicking myself for not buying the pictures. It wasn't important to me then. Well guess what it is important to me now! But the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway is some of the best riding I ever did.

Those are some great pictures. Thanks for sharing... It would be awesome to make a trip out that way to ride the dragon. Someday... I need more time off from work--I know I am not the only one in that catagory.

You are so lucky! I went 2 summers ago with my dad and 3 of my uncles. Have yet to find anything that compares to the riding there!
Great Shots! Nice leans into the corners! i scraped my boards on almost every turn there, and my uncle's nickname for me was Sparky on that trip.

Nice...

That is on my 2do list! Do you have to watch out for crazy riders going the opposite direction coming into your lane?
What would be the best time of year to go..if you could only do it once?

I think I took my bike up there about a month after I bought it and had to get floorboards after I went up and down the mountain two time! It was awesome!

Hands down best time of the year is early fall when the leaves start coming down. Temps will still be in the 70s to 80s, good color on the trees, and usually good weather.
As for the other riders... There always idiots on the crotch rockets passing you no matter what' but I have to say that Tennessee state patrol has really stepped it up and stroked a ton of tickets to them crazies going 60 through there! You can avoid most of the slow moving cage tourist and the organ donors by going during the middle of the week eatrly morning to lunch is a good time.

One thing I learned while riding the dragon is to take it real slow the first time so you can learn just how sharp some of the turns are. If the speed it posted 10 mph turn, then you should take it at 10 mph. Sometimes even going 10 mph around curves i would scrape.
The other thing I had to learn was to stay to the right of the center line.in iowa on flat roads we usually hug the center line when riding. If you do that at the dragon, you are likely to tag someone coming from the opposite direction.
Especially important on left hand sweepers, because your bike will cross the center line when leaning hard left. i witnessed this first hand the first time riding the Dragon, a Harley Rider going one way, and a Sport bike rider coming the other way. Not sure whos fault it was, but the Sport bike rider died from impact right there and the Harley rider had a broken femur!
We went in late August/ early September and avoided riding it on the weekends. Heres a pic of my old bike on Lake Fontana just past Deals Gap.
