So I had a bit of a mishap last November that left me with a wrinkled front fender. A friends shop and an insurance company were supposed to be sorting it out...but that's turned into a 9 month long Greek Tragedy that has involved 3 different fenders, a shit paint job, a lost shipment, a flood, and a fucking tornado.


Believe me...I seriously wish I was making this shit up...


Anyway, I'm trying to find either a front fender for a Scarlet Red 2010 FLTRX (yes it's the one in my sig), or the OEM part number for a (matching) factory painted fender that I can use to search with/for.


I've found OEM PNs for paint schemes that were close, but not this one which has the - basically ghosted - pin striping like the attached pic (that I swiped of the web somewhere).

Now granted I only started looking (literally) yesterday. But the ongoing saga started back in November when I picked up the bike (at night) got is back home, and then finally having a chance to view the paint job under florescent lighting in the garage saw that the hyper critical surface preparation steps had not been done.


Pardon the side track, but while I'm not a painter, I have done paint work in the aircraft industry (many years ago). Back then I shot everything from enamels, to ceramics, to solid film lubricants for high pressure flanges. And the one transcendent key to a good application was and always will be:
Surface preparation, surface preparation, and surface preparation.


So when under the florescent lights I saw the forming press marks shining through the allegedly $900 paint job ...Well ... I had a shit fit.


The shop I'd taken it to was owned by a guy I'd gone to high school with. And he'd drug himself through a knothole to get the bike back to me in time for the holidays. He'd left the fender in it's box, because there shouldn't have been any need to inspect it since to had been shot by one of the area dealers preferred painters. And then it was installed in shop which was lit with mercury vapor lights...


We're talking serious rush job last minute - thanks bro - pickup at 7:00pm on fucking Christmas eve. He missed it ... Shit happens.


When I brought it back later and showed him the - lack of - quality in the paint job. He was - quite possible - madder than I was.


The old fender was hammered back into shape. The new fender was returned to the painter for repair. And then the big storm that hit Louisiana the same time my - possibly painted properly - fender did...resulted in it being flushed out into the Gulf of Mexico somewhere.


tl:dr anybody??:grin:


So short version is, my buddy's shop is going under, he's cashed me out for a "fair market" value of the (now still dangling issue) fender ... And I'm effectively on-my-own trying to find said and aforementioned proper replacement fender.


...According to eBay, they're not nearly as popular as I'd hoped they would be..


Regarding your pic, yes it's a nice fender...but it's just not me. I'm kind of a grouchy, old school, just want it to be stock kind of guy.


Can you post a picture of the Eglide fender? (I'm not adverse to a bit of trim - if the paint matches) :wink:

The Eglide fender is minus all the trim, would be more cost effective to find a nice RG fender.

30 years painting aircraft from small Cessnas to Gulfstreams as well as being an A&P mech, I totally know where yer coming from on the prep work!

I've seen a few of those fenders come out of the box with stamping die marks in them, even primed HD fenders right out of the box!
Not hard to take care of them of course but that's too bad they slipped by you painter.

I will ask around a bit for ya. Of course good fenders are all over the place until you really need one ?
