Need touring seat suggestions

33693 Views 60 Replies 34 Participants Last post by  Gadgetech
I need a new touring seat and I'm looking for recommendations. I had my Street Glide Sundowner seat Butt Buffered ($250) and was really disappointed! After only an hour, my co-pilot and I both had sore butts!?!?

I've heard good things about Mustangs super touring seats but wanted to get more feedback before pulling the trigger. Any and all recommendations would be appreciated.

Good idea Chain .... I'm heading to Quaker Steak bike night tomorrow and Thunder in the Valley Friday with a plan to find someone with one of these seat! I'm also checking out dual exhaust! So wish me luck!!
Just remember to ask before you throw a leg over someone's bike, or you might not have to worry about a new seat. Your ass may get stomped into a new form :D

lol .... :D
Be careful with the Mustangs. They tend to move you further away from the bars and controls (at least the solos in my experience), so you may find yourself too far back. I have a Mustang solo on the fat Bob,and I also had one on the Sportster, (and they are great seats for me) but on the touring bikes, I've heard they move you back. I don't need to change my position.

I'm 6' and 215lbs,and 30-31 inch inseam, and the stock seat fits me almost perfectly, riding position wise, but after 19k miles the foam seems to be giving too much, so I sent my stocker in to Mean City Cycles for a rebuild with memory foam.

I'm getting double Memory Foam for me,and single, but keep the exact same height, and memory foam for the passenger, and asking them to move me forward 1/2-1 inch from the stock position. Seat has shipped back to me, and will be here this Saturday,so I'll let you know how it feels when it gets back.

Total cost is about $220.

I also bought a Harley Hammock seat, and it is BIG. Way wider, and while it is comfortable when the wife and I are going touring, it's too ugly to have on the bike (IMO) unless we're sitting on it. It does work well (as designed),and provides good suspension to avoid shocks to your spine, but did I mention it is BIG?

Good suggestion to visit bike shows or dealers for trying on seats. Some dealers will let you try them on your bike. Check around and see whats possible.

I have the HD Signature Series Solo Touring Seat w/Rider Backrest:

And, HD Signature Series Touring Passenger Pillion:

Not cheap, but I have really liked it. I like that it's a Solo Seat because 95% of the time, I cruise around w/the passenger pillion, backrest, and luggage rack off. And, when I put on he Passenger Pillion, it's very comfortable for Dawn.

Last year I did two 2K plus trips on this seat, one of which Dawn went w/me. She would stay in the saddle up to 150 miles at a pop w/o looking for a stop and wasn't complaining about her rear when we got off. I did 250 miles on Sunday riding back to Columbia, SC, from Eastern, NC, and was comfortable on this seat.

Hope this helps...
This is not a bad option too ... I kind of like the solo look! But for that kind of money I can get a Mustang, Corbin or Saddleman. Who knows I might end up buying padded under shorts for me and the Ms "my butt hurts" ....and save myself a lot of $$$$$
You're right, it wasn't cheap, but nothing on these sleds are. Just because it's HD, doesn't mean it's not a great seat. I personnally think HD did pretty damn good w/this seat combo...

Best of luck w/your seat search! :)
For what it's worth, the Mustang seat has been the best for me, but it's fairly thick and changes your seat height.
i tried a used oem ultra seat..old lady said it was the best so far...2 yrs no complaints..has good back support but ime 60 been in the seat 44 yrs..so what do i know

Any problem with marking the fender with the pass pad?
Any problem with marking the fender with the pass pad?
I've avoided any markings on the fender by placing a microfiber cloth between the P-pad and the fender when the P-pad is on.
Does the seat push you up, down, forward or back from the oem seat?

Nice seat by the way. I'm trying to match your seat against a C&C solo w/backrest and rear pad.
Well, I can't really say how it compares to the stock seat, as I bought this seat new with this bike. I had them put it on when I bought it and it's the only seat I've ridden on this bike. I feel like I am up on the tank, but I think that comes w/the Six Gallon tank. I don't feel like I am cramped up on the handlebars. I like the seat and the back seat is big and soft enough for a passenger to be very comfortable when it's being used. To me, it was worth the purchase and I like it enough to recommend to y'all. If I didn't think it was worth buying, I would either not say anything or thrash it publicly.

Road Sofa here as well.. best seat my ass has ever felt. 6'3" 250 lbs nice ass (so says my wife)
My wife says I AM an ass,

I used the Mustang Wide Vintage Solo on my first trip to Sturgis on my 03 FXD, loved the seat. Wife was to cramped on the back on that bike, long legs, nice ass though,

I bought a used 04 RG and installed the H-D Road Zeppelin Air Leather seat on it and the wife can ride 4 times longer on it before she has to get off due to sore butt. I love the Zeppelin and really never need to play much with the air,
I picked up a Saddlemen Explorer with backrest used from Roady4life from this forum. It took a few miles to get use to it but after about 600 miles I love it. It does move you forward and it seemed to sit a little high at first but once I got use to it its fine. The best backrest I have ever used.
We have a Harley Hammock seat on our '09 Road Glide and it is comfy for the two of us. Bought a Corbin solo with backrest, largest pilion they offer and backrest pad for the Harley quick detachable upright and it just does NOT fit us. All new and going up on eBay unless I get another offer from someone. Bike is pearl Black so the gray scheme of the Corbin set up looks great, just doesn't fit us.

I have a Tall Boy on my 2010 Roadie. I did 13 hrs straight on it a few weeks ago. Its a great seat for rider and the passenger.
Frag any pic's of your bike with the hammock seat?

Ok I'll ask the question I'm sure most have...how much you looking to get for the seat combo, and is it all leather even the gray piece, or some material? Any info will help for someone to take it off your back.

I have a full listing up on Craigs List for now, and you can see it here http://montana.craigslist.org/mcy/1850497390.html

The faux Snake Skin is one of Corbins more durable custom designs and is leather. The gray material directly below the faux Snake Skin is also leather. The only vinyl area is the bottom tail area of the front solo seat, and this was chosen for its durability and less maintenance necessity. The black braided welt is a nice touch.
I put the Signature Solo Seat with Rider Backrest (51700-09) on my '10 FLTRX. It moved me forward between 1" and 2." (Which is what I wanted - I'm 5'9 with 32" inseam.) I can't tell if it moved me up or not. I just got back from a 5700 mile, 15 day trip. Many days were 500 to 650 miles. The seat was fine. I might have some memory foam put in it to fit a little better, but it's not absolutely necessary.

The first thing I noticed after putting on the seat was the increased application of the rear brake. My foot now pushes down on the pedal instead of pushing forward. (Hope you understand.)

The next alteration will be the Heritage bars.
