Well, after reading a billion threads on changing 17-19 RGS shocks or not or too, and which ones and on and on and on I figured I would just pull the trigger and see what happens. Pretty sure no one can tell my butt which ones are best but me. I have about 2k miles on the stockers now. I ride hard and fast but requested a plush ride to see how it works out with passenger. I can always stiffen them up. I go 200lbs and wife is 150 so they say they will be stiff for solo and that is perfect......I think. I'm 5'10" with longer legs so height is not going to be an issue. Currently have 19 RGS.

Start off by saying I don't hate the so called "premium" shocks. They are not as cushy ride as some I've had but don't really think you can expect a cushy ride with low profile tires and lowered ride. I like my thin solo seat(wide tripper) and wife is not a fan of the passenger pad so instead of always riding with the couch I figured I would try plus shocks first.

I decided on the longer shocks, 14's with lowering blocks. Kit is from DK Custom. My main goal is to make it good for old lady with thinner pad. I've ridden all kinds of Harleys and some had no shocks at all so I can live with a little bumpy ride as long as I get to keep my solo seat (except for long distance rides).

As soon as shocks get here I will get them on then update how it's going.

I have to admit, I have drank the cool aid before and been disappointed but with so many liking upgraded shocks I figure it's worth a try.

Update in a week or so.

I've been looking at the koolaid jar-tried pro 944-didn't like-tried hd adj shock,actually like-looking at super shox in 14",with lower block for bottom end of mount-3.5 in of travel-gotta luv the koolaid

Have the 2017 RGS and changed my shocks to the Progressive 944 shocks and find them much better than the stock ones. There may be better shocks out there but I am happy with the change. It holds much better when riding thru curves and the bike feel more solid without washing out at speeds. As for taking bumps it is smoother on highway riding and when I hit bigger bumps I still get jarred but not so bad that my spine feels it.

I waited way too long to upgrade the shocks on my 2016 RGU. First let me say that a couple of pieces of welded rebar would be close to the original shocks. I went with Ohlins from Smarty and he helped me get them set up. Totally transformed my bike. They are not cheap but Shorty has as good a deal as any and is available to help get things squared away. Good luck, practically anything you do is bound to be better than original??

Shocks installed today. As expected, pretty simple process. Went for a quick ride with wife with the "shipped settings". Can't say there was an "wow" moment. Got one quick ride in and found I have about another 1" of travel not being used so adjusting pre-load to get all the travel....and it's raining.

So shocks not broke in yet and definitely some adjusting to do but at this point nothing that noticeable over stock M8 shocks.

Tow days of rain then I will be getting them dailed in for us. Definitely another inch of travel to be had.

Updates this weekend.

Still a lot of adjusting to do but I will be as honest as I can. Everyone remember, this is just an assessment of MY shocks, on MY bike, with MY butt. That doesn't mean you can't like your shocks or hate them. LOL

An inch of travel is still a lot of shock left on the table and haven't even got to rebound adjustment if needed.

I forgot to measure my seat height before I changed shocks **DAMMIT* but going from the 12" to 14" with 1" lowering kit feels like about an inch higher than stock.

I will have to trim about an eighth inch off quick detach backrest for shock clearance. Installation was a breeze. Done it many times before and everything was straight forward. read directions all the way through first and take your time. took about 40 minutes from unboxing to test ride.

I think good shocks really shine when going down the road and you start hitting bumps and potholes, especially loaded down. Just riding on a smooth road , I really couldn't tell a big difference. Now on the front ,I could tell immediately ,but that's a different thread.

On my only ride so far we hit all the manholes that jolt us with stock shocks and they jolted us with the new shocks.

You're right, would do much good just rolling down a nice smooth rode to test the new shocks. My point is, we don't have much rough stuff here like back in Iowa after winter were I used to ride.

So rain stopped and adjustments went on. With the wife on the back, after 4 trips out to check travel I ended up lowering spring tension FIVE complete turns. This left me about a 1/4" left at the bottom for shock break-in and junk on the luggage rack. That's how much tension was taken off to get that extra inch of travel. MUCH better now. Shew buddy, I was worried I was not going to be happy with the shocks. Whole new animal now. I have not and will not adjust bleeder until we ride a few more days just to get used to how it feels now.

Bike does handle a little bit different (in 90 degree turns in town while getting on the power) a little; little softer, but not bad. Wife is happy too.

Even though I did not measure seat height, I would say the difference is about an 1 to 1-1/4" higher. My feet are at the same pace with tennis shoes on ( lower seat), that they were with higher Mustang seat with boots on. Exactly how I wanted it.

I did have to file down quick detach mounts about a 1/8" so they don't hit the top of the shock. I will get pics to show that. Mine are black but the filing area is not visible when mounted. But, something you might need to do. Also, I had to space the top of the shock out just a little and that caused a tight fit on the quick detach plastic inserts in the front mount parts (pics also.) So I had to file them down a little to make it easier to install and remove. My backrest is an OEM Harley

So far I am real happy with the new shocks. I definitely can tell a difference but cant compare to a 13" shock with no lowering because I haven't ridden on one.

After some miles this next week I will play with the rebound bleeder and see how that changes things.
