Harley Davidson has a new battery on their website. It is a "Lithium LiFe 8Ah Battery" Part # 66000175. They claim it lasts twice as long as the stock battery at 80% lighter weight (3.3 lbs compared to 21 lbs for a stock battery). It costs $300. I have zero expertise on batteries. Does anyone have an opinion on this type of battery?

Unless I can verify 100% that they have improved, I never plan to buy another lithium. On the way back from SW111 I had my stator go bad. The lithium battery drained really fast. With normal batteries you can go for awhile, with the lithium 10 miles was stretching it. They are light and charge fast, but they are not as durable as regular batteries, the tech specialist I talked with verified that.

I have lithium batteries in three of my four bikes, strictly for high initial CCAs & light weight. In a 900 lb. HD bagger, the weight factor is not nearly as important as in a 396 lb. Ducati.
Plus, lithium batteries have 1/3 the capacity as similar sized lead acid or AGM batteries, meaning they will discharge 3x quicker under a parasitic draw. Your HD has a clock and an ECU, which will drain the battery by themselves if not ridden or on a tender - parasitic draw. Also, lithium batteries do not like cold weather, and if they get to a certain level of discharge, they are ruined. My advice is to stick with an AGM battery in your RG. Big Crank by Deka/East Penn through Battery Mart is the exact, same battery as OEM without the HD logos. About $100 delivered.

I wish I had this information about 6 years ago, I definitely agree with you.

Lithium have had their issues as well as they place. Lighter for racing. I know some racers that use them for that reason. Not sure if I'll be jumping on this anytime soon.
I live and ride in cold so that is one downside.

I guess they should call it a "LiTe" Battery then. By calling it a LiFE, you would think it would last 15 years ??
Considering I haven't kept a bike longer than 6 years with an average of 3, the stock battery is a life battery for me.

I bought a used Moto Guzzi that came with a LiFe battery. It required a special charger, and from my research a special voltage regulator if your bike isn't designed to handle a LiFe battery. Maybe all the modern bikes can handle it.

I didn't want to buy the special charger and didn't ride the bike enough so the battery died and was replaced with a glass matt battery.

Wish this thread had occurred last fall. I just replaced mine on my '17 last fall after OEM failed to take a charge. Stealer recommended and had to put the special charge cable on for tender. I live in the cool north and now has me thinking I wasted $300.00. Unfortunately, I did not take the time to research more, as I was at Stealership already. UGH..

Haven't seen any hit the shop yet, but HD claims the new one reduces the touring battery weight by 17.5 lbs. Pretty crazy. It'll be interesting to see how well the first round of them is received. $299.99 MSRP, but 2 year warranty. Gotta get the new charger for it though, so there's a little added expense there.

One more for Battery mart's Big crank, great battery and mad in the US of A! as another note, Lithium batteries don't like vibration or excessive heat, not worth it to me personally JMO.

Keep us posted on the new battery, this can be a real world test and I hope it lasts and is durable for you.
