First things first. I am a newbie to the groups so I fully expect to take a beating. Feel free.

I recently bought a 2010 RG and I wanted to throw out my first impressions and get some feedback on some things I've noticed that I have concerns about.

The RG is a great bike. For now it's all stock with about 2K miles on it. I'll likely keep it that way another thousand or so to get a better feel for what I want to add and change.

I also have a 2006 FXDWGI and the RG is a completely different riding experience. Where the FXDWGI makes you work for your fun (twistys, low speed maneuvering, etc.) the RG seems to know what you're doing before you do it. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely enjoy all the demands the FXDWGI puts on you. I could not possibly be happier with it. Beyond that, even with the low miles I have on it, I wouldn't give up the RG at the point of a shotgun.

The RG is just a different animal. Everything from the riding position to the perceived weight of the bike (the Wide Glide feels considerably heavier) is different and it is all good. The wind buffeting everyone talks about I haven't experienced. I am approaching 6' 1" with a 34" inseam and the wind line coming across my helmet seems extremely smooth. At similar speeds it also seems much lighter than I am used to on the Wide Glide. It is a much, much more relaxed experience than the WG.

But I am new to the RG and some things seem odd to me… The transmission is noisy. I really did not expect this. Coming to a stop and downshifting into first the transmission whines. Noticeably. The six speed on the Wide Glide doesn't do this and it makes me wonder. At lows speeds in first working the clutch quickly also causes a loud metallic thump, something the WG also doesn't do.

The thumps concerned me enough that I took it into the dealer. I was told a compensator spring needed replacement and that the transmission fluid should be changed to "Red Line". The thump hasn't reoccured… yet, but the whine is still there.

Then there is engine noise. The level of engine noise seems considerably higher than I am used to. If I relate it back to cars I would call it tappet noise. In an older car that noise would be a sign that the oil was low, but the oil level in the bike seems fine. I am guessing that the noise level is being compounded by the fairing, but I am not sure and I'd like to be.

Does any of this sound familiar to you veteran RG owners out there? Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Trans noise and clunking

One thing I've just noticed is my 2010 now that it has almost 3000 on it which is nothing...the transmission has gotten noisier and I wondering if it's the Synthetic they put in it. Last 2007 Street Glide I switched to the Mobil1 synthetic gear lube and smoothed it right out and quited it down considerably. Going this weekend to change it...Harley's synthetic is to light weight it seems.

........ welcome to 'the Darkside' of Harley Davidson !
.... I run an 88 w/the 5 spd, so not really qualified to comment on 'the noises' you're hearing.
....... glad you're not having an issue w/ buffetting. It really bothers some. i put lowers on my RG right away, so it's never been an issue for me.
...... i like your comment re: the Wide Glide feeling heavier. I've always been pleased w/ how nimble my big'ol fixed fairing land yacht felt.
.... Enjoy the new ride !!

I too have a loud tranny or cluth. When I let clutch it in and out it makes a catching noise (clunking) that I didnt have on my Fat Bob. I'm taking it to the dealer ASAP to find out whats up. I'll keep you posted

mtatl, Noises? I've not found any noises that are any different than any other Harley that I have ever owned. Best thing to do is what you've done. If theres something that YOU dont think is rite, take it back to the Dealer so it is documented! Compensator spring needing replaced on a brand new bike is ODD! But you've done the rite thing by taking it to the dealer for replacement. I've owned every different Motor that Harley has produced (No V-Rod, I've rode one but didnt buy it) in the last 25 years, and all I can tell ya is that "They all make Different Sounds"! but I've never had any "MAJOR" issues. Sorry I couldnt be of more help to ya. Congrats on your "Newest Machine" Run the wheels off that thing, you'll get used to it! BTW feel free here on this forum. Ya aint gonna take any Beating from anyone. Just let me know if ya do. Chainsaw will fix m.

well this is my third sharkie , have been on them since 1984 , and I concur with you on the wind buffeting , I dont know what buffeting everyone speaks of here , I got buffeting terrible on this bike around the factory 12.5" windshield , until I changerd to a CV 14.5 , but never any buffeting from down under ..

It feels lighter because the wind gets under the fairing and "lifts" the front end ever so slightly , or so I believe ..

Never any probs with trans whine either here ,,

The extra noise , the tappet noise as you call it I hear as well , my belief is you hear more noise because the fairing is pushing the air away from the bike , and you can hear better because of the change in airflow from the WG ..

Contrats on the new ride

Congrats... I would have to concur with some of the noises your are hearing, but I agree that you probably hear more due to the faring allowing you to hear what is actually been there the whole time. Just sayin.

I did notice one thing that was different from all of the different Harley models I have owned over the last thirty or so years. When I shift into different gears, there is a defiant clunk. When the Pre-paid service runs out I will change the transmission fluid to a better fluid.

The top end noise is loader than the older models I have owned. I have owned Shovelshead BT and Ironhead Sportsters. I have owned one 80" Flathead and several EVOs. This is my first Twin Cam. I just attribute this to the fact it is a Twinkie.

Welcome

As the others said, you won't get all beat up here. I have made a few bone- headed comments since joining and they have just been ignored. Thanks guys and gal for that, by the way. Everyone is here for one reason, we all ride the glyde and want to make it better for each other.

Welcome to the site, enjoy.

Thanks Everybody

Thanks to everyone for the welcome and all the insights and advice. The red line has quieted the transmission and I have not heard the clunking again… so far.

I feel like I have documented everything with the dealer so now I am going to concentrate on riding the RG…

Thanks again!
