Hi all, Just recently joined this forum and have been reading the Audio section trying to make sense of it all but am more confused than ever now.
Been on bike for many years but this is the first one for me with audio.
I have very little knowledge about audio systems in general other than what sounds good or bad to me.
I have a few dislikes with the standard system setup on my 2012 road glide I would like to correct.

To me it sounds a bit ordinary, doesn't handle volume very well, won't play a mp3 data burn disc and has no USB input. What I do like about it is it is very easy to use.

I understand that a new head unit is necessary to play the music I want via USB and give a better over all performance. A new amp and speakers to pull it all together. Adapter rings, wiring system and mounting assembly will need to be compatible also.
I am not looking for a killer setup just a nice over all system using just 2 speakers in the stock locations.
Head units seem to be a matter of preference with some lasting longer than others which could be down to good luck or not.

What are your suggestions for a simple but effective system that would be considered a good upgrade.
There is one issue with all of this. I am in Australia and there is almost no product available here that I have found and a number of vendors In USA don't ship internationally but some do offer their distributors/retailers as potential shippers.

Any help with this would be much appreciated but please keep it simple as I am not and never have been knowledgeable on audio systems.

cheers
Max

You will get a lot of different opinions and answers for this. Companies like Hawgwired or Biketronics have everything you need to change over and do it simple. Crutchfield also has a good price on a kit to convert. Your budget and sound opinions are going to be what you have to go by, but just about everything is better than stock.

Welcome from Birmingham AL. I had HD put the BOOM speakers on mine with no amp and it works well. I can hear it at 80-9O. As far as working the phone or MP3 get a adaptor for the headphones and plug into the head unit 10.00 at target.

Thanks guys, was out riding again today and it definitely needs help. I think I have just about driven it to destruction.
Plan is AMP , Speakers and Head Unit.
budget maybe $1k
looked at a few sites with package deals but I think I could get a better outcome buying different products just from reading the mix that members here have put together.
I guess finding a head unit that I can easily get the wiring connection kit and a mounting set up for is the main issue for now.

That's a loaded question around here.

I went with Hawgwired and the system is awesome, high quality stuff. You should be able to get most of what you are looking for at 1K. Do you have Iphones down under? Before I would go with a different head unit I would get an Ipod/Iphone adapter kit and mount it in my saddle bag. Its easy, all controls work, super clean source for music and it recharges as you ride in case you need GPS. That's just my 2cents as you said you wanted it to be easy.

cheers for the info.
You guys are so funny some times. ah yes we have actually seen an Iphone in real life as surprising as that may seem to some. Mate we are on the same planet you know. Iphone is very big here as it is every where but I generally go against the pack. I use android and refuse to have any apple product in our family, that ruffles a few feathers some times but that's my choice.

You know we got some pretty amazing stuff here and even export it to you guys. Have a look at the team that just won the America's Cup.:D

I guess I gave you a soft ball with that one... Go with the Iphone, the new apps with the 64 bit processor are going to be awesome. Besides your supporting your American mates. If it makes you feel any better I bought a Breville 900 dual boiler and it is kick ass...

I have some friends down under and have visited- Aussies are always a fun bunch to hang with... Can't drink for shit:)

It's all good mate I just couldn't resist.
Not sure about the drinking bit, we drink real beer here not that half watered down stuff.

Looks like I will be using some hawg wired gear and a kenwood head unit. just a few $ over budget with shipping but it all good.

Thanks for all the help from you all.
Appreciate it

yes it does but not when I burn it as a MP3 data disc, which as far as I know is the only way to get 90+ songs on a disc. I guess my head unit could be not working properly also.
Either way it will be resolved with a USB featured head unit

Well after the advice here and reading a lot of posts I have ordered the following parts which I think will be an obvious improvement from the stock set up.
Will take a few weeks to get here and a few more weeks before it is installed with all the other mods going on.

RS400 - Reference Series 400W Amplifier
AR65 - 6.5 Speaker Adapter Rings
ZX654-100 - ZX Series 6.5 Component Speakers
WX400 - CS/RS Series Amplifier Install Kit
RG5252 - Steel Mesh Speaker Grills
AB150R - Sharknose Amplifier Bracket
BT 1005 Radio Install Kit
Kenwood KDC-X897

Again thanks for all the input and advice.

Still would like to get a hidden antenna set up but haven't yet decided which one to get. I do need to get it soon as I want to do all the faring and front end work at the same time.

Cheers

ozymax, if you want the handlebar controls to work with that set up you will also need Hawg Wired's HUA360 Harley Universal Radio Adapter.
That unit will make your hand controls work as if it was the OEM Unit.
Hope this info helps.
Best of luck with your new setup.
I'm a big fan of Hawg Wired as I have their setup on my 2012 Glide and love it.
Mike and Justin are great guys and HW has Customer Service that is second to none.

I just realized you ordered the Biketronics Install Kit.
Best of luck with it.

I really have no idea with this stuff so it's all learning for me. Trouble with wires is you can't see what the hell is going on if your as green as me with this stuff.
