Can anyone break down the different models. I know they start with #3- ...
I think theres 3 different models for touring. From what I understand the #3-3 are non adjustable 12". and the #3-2 are 13" but sag 1" so they are like 12 " when sitting ??? Im confused

Well there are at least four basic models: #1, #2, #3 and #6.

#1 is an Emulsified 36mm piston shock. This model has a chrome spring and end cap. It comes in three fixed lengths and strokes. The model number and specs are:

#1-#1 12"/305 mm Stroke: 1. 2 7/16"/88 mm
#1-#6 12.59"/320 mm Stroke: 6. 2 1/2"/64 mm
#1-#7 12.95”/329 mm Stroke: 3 5/16"/84 mm


#2 is an Emulsified 36mm piston shock with a black spring and no chrome. It comes in four fixed lengths and strokes. The model number and specs are:

#2-#1 11 5/8"/296 mm Stroke: 2 3/4"/71 mm
#2-#2 12"/305 mm Stroke: 2 1/2"/65 mm
#2-#3 13 1/4"/337 Stroke: 4 3/32"/104 mm
#2-#4 13 3/8"/340 mm Stroke: 3 7.5/16"/88 mm

#3 is a separated 36mm piston shock that can be ordered with a black or a yellow spring. There are four different lengths/strokes. All but length #1 is Externally Adjustable for Length, All have externally adjustable Compression & Rebound (sweep Valve), Spring Preload Length. The four model numbers and specifications are:

#3-#1 307 mm no length adjustment 12" Only Stroke: 2 5/8"/67mm
#3-#2 325 +5mm/-5 mm = low of 12 19/32”~almost 13” Stroke: 2. 2 5/8"/67mm
#3-#3 329 +5mm/- 5 mm = low of 12 ¾”~13 9/64 Stroke:3 1/32"/77mm
#3-#4 336 +10mm/-0 mm = low of 13 7/32”~ 13.21/32” Stroke: 3 1/32"/77mm

The #6 shocks are still in the development stage. There is only one length option listed at this time. They are similar to #3 shocks but have external remote reservoirs.

#6-#1 13 1/4"/337 Stroke: 3 5/8"/93 mm


Stock touring shocks are 13" in length with the exception of any lowered models that may have 12" shocks. If you want a fully adjustable high performance shock you would want the #3 or #6 models. These shocks separate the nitrogen and hydraulic oil into two chambers rather than mixing the two together as in the emulsified designs. They also have adjustable compression and rebound valves to fine tune the ride.

The advice you will get on setting up the #3 or #6 shocks is the sag should be 1/3 of the length of the stroke. So when you sit on the bike with a typical load the shocks should compress 1/3rd of of their total travel. This is a good rule of thumb for any shock with an adjustable preload.

I think the most popular length of the #3 model is the #3-#3 as it's center of adjustable length is close to 13". I ordered the #3-#4 to give me just a little extra height in the rear. I am putting on 4" diameter mufflers and didn't want to sacrifice too much ground clearance. Hopefully the little bit of extra length will help keep the mufflers from dragging in the twisties. They can only be set about a half inch longer so it is probably not that big a deal but it sounds good anyway.

WOW !!! Now thats a response !!!! Thanks for that info. went on motorcycle metal but my mac computer wont open the ohlins pages. I have a trx ( 12" shock) thinkin about the #3-#1 to retain the same height. I have a short inseam and barley flatfoot as it is. I ride 1 up 95% of the time. My weight fluctuates between 190 - 200. my wife is small . Adding a tourpack but that would still fall under the 5% of 2 up. The #3-#3 seem to be the favorite. But why ??

They are the most popular for folks with 13" OEM shocks. There are more touring models with 13"shocks than 12"shocks. There are folks who want to lower the rear of bikes with 13" OEM shocks but I have seen more people ordering #3-#3 over on HDForums than anything else. MotorcycleMetal is a forum vendor over there.

I am on a PC and I was having trouble with some of the pages as well. The owner, Howard, was involved in a motorcycle accident in mid-December. If there are problems on his site he may not be back in action yet to deal with it.

So based on my bike (fltrx) , weight/height and riding style what do you think I should go with. ps I ride real aggressive. streets of NYC and long island

If you like the look of the lower rear end and you are not having any problems dragging parts when riding aggressively now there isn't any reason raise the height. Having a good set of performance shock should improve handling and reduce dragging of bike parts compared to OEM shocks. If you are routinely dragging your mufflers then it is difficult to know how much of that can be eliminated with 12" Ohlins. The overall adjustment of the adjustable shocks is about 0.4". However the minimum height change, due to the shaft length options, going from a #3-#1 to a #3-#2 is 0.51". If you think you could have a problem only you can make the decision which is more important, form or function.

I have an RGU so lowering the rear end isn't going to make my butt look any smaller. :) The #3-#4 at it's lowest setting is less than 1/4" higher than stock on my RGU which would not be noticeable. I would still have the option of raising it another 0.4" if I have any issues with dragging larger diameter mufflers. I usually lean toward function over form if that choice has to be made. But that's just me. There isn't a right or wrong way.

If someone here with a TRX hasn't already done this upgrade or any performance shock upgrade you may want to try asking questions over on HDForums. If you are a member of the HDForum you might be able to get a forum discount from MotorcycleMetal seeing as they are a forum vendor there.

I have been mostly off my feet due to back problems for the last two months. I am getting annoyed because my Ohlins are just sitting in the garage. Hopefully I will be able to get them on in the next couple of weeks.

I've been able to talk to Howard at motorcyclemetel on three occasions after his accident so he still answers his phone. I purchased the 3 - 3's also, as Howard states the bike will lower with your weight when you sit on it, this puts the shock into 1/3 suspension. I told Howard I was looking to lower my '11 Road Glide but he stated once I sit on it after my Ohlins install the bike will sit lower (maybe an inch).
I probably won't get to ride on my new shocks until Mar/Apr because of my location, but when I get my shocks "dialed in" I'm promised the best ride of my life (Howard), full performance, total suspension, no bottoming out, shocks.

I just ordered a set of # 6 shocks from motorcycle metal yesterday,Howard set me up with what he says is the best shock on the planet for the touring harley. He is setting them up for my needs,you don't get support like that from a catalog.I also have the fltrx but not woried about lifting the rear of the bike.I will write a review on them after i road test them and dial them in.

I said these would be my first mod, but now I want a tour pak, true duels, a solo seat, new grips, mirrors, a bunch of black powder coating, bag guards, new speakers/amp, and gps/xm, etc, etc, etc.

Guess my butt will have to suffer a bit longer.
