I've got an 08 RG with pretty much a stock motor other then dual head pipes and a stage 1 intake. My bike does not have an oil cooler on it currently. I am looking at the Ultra Cool Reefer or the Wards head fans. I would think that both of them would be ideal but $$ right now only allows for one. Which one would be the most effective to start with?

I have the ultra cool refer with dual fans. It works great. I live in FL, where is gets plenty hot at stop lights. I can't tell you it is better than the wards fans though.

Harley also has a new oil pan that holds 1.5 more quarts. Add all three and you would be good to go.

You don't say if you have any tuner , with the mods you listed you probably should as it would be leaner now than from the factory and they are pretty lean from the start .

Maine-operator heater on board

I am running the wards head fans, They work great. I bought the auto switch which is an additional $20 and removed it. Its a sensor that is pressed between the head fins to activate when temps are up and off when lowered. I took it out and run with the manual switch. I switch it on after warm up and turn off after removing my helmet and ready to walk away from the bike. When its really hot I have left it on and return back to the bike in 15 mins. or so. I have left them on for 30 mins. before without problems. If you look on their site, the fans cut about 50 degrees in head temp. More heat on the right leg though. If you do purchase them pm me if you want the mico switch.You buy me a couple of cold beers at sharkweek, I will bring it with me.

I like the idea of not having remote lines to the heat exchangers. Simplicity is always best. I don't like the location of the factory cooloers. Directly behind the front fender, shows wear in the paint after 4-5000 miles.

Its not hot often in Maine think of the motor as a warmer!

Fans cool the motor when stopped in traffic-the oil cooler won't. Even a fan assisted oil cooler won't keep the motor as cool as cooling fans on the cylinders.

I have the Wards fan and it works great. If I were to go with an oil cooler I would go for the ultra cool reefer. I like the braided lines they use verses rubber lines with hose clamps all the others use.

Go with a oil cooler IMO. To me unless you are driving in city traffic most of the time then a Wards fan would be good.
There is more of a advantage to keeping the oil cool. In most riding situations the airflow on the engine while riding is going to be 15 mph and above and a wards fan or a fan in a oil cooler is worthless.
The oil cooler works well at all riding speeds to cool the oil and IMO a fan assist oil cooler is not needed unless you are doing city riding a lot.
Get a good Jagg 10 row oil cooler (because it works better than the POS HD oil cooler) and get the oil cooler without the thermostat and fan and you should be good.

I live in Houston where it gets pretty darn hot in the summer. I have the Jagg 10 row fan assisted. My oil temps are really too low IMO....vary from 170-200 on mild days. 200-210 on hot days. never gets over 230 even in 100 degree heat, stopNgo traffic.

Cost about $400 with adapter. works great.

I have both Ward's fans and the Ultracool, hard to say which does more because I installed both close to the same time, but they do work. My engine hasn't gone into the one cylinder mode since.

I've got a built 103, and I'm about to pull the trigger on the Ultracool. I agree that once you're rolling the fans are of little or no use. I'm doing it for those 5 minute freakin' red lights in the inevitable traffic when it's 95+ out. The rear cylinder cutout was engaging way too often for my liking, and that was before I had it built. If those long hot stops are all the benefit I get, I think it's more than worth it as that's probably the scenario in which most of the damage is likely to occur.
