Oil filter question

I have a 21 RGL with the M8 114. The last time I did an oil change I did get the filter from Harley. It is the longer filter. This time I purchased Amsoil oil change kit and it had the smaller oil filter. I ordered a K & N 171C thinking it was the larger filter but it's not. What does others use for their M8 114 and other than HD, does anyone else make the longer filter? Or is this another one of Harley's ways of ensuring we all buy their products?

Thanks

I am by far no expert on oil filters but you can have more filter surface area with a shorter filter cannister. The amount of filter media can be increased when there are more and deeper pleats. In other words, the length of the cannister isn't the only thing you should consider.

Ive used HD, K&N and cheap off brands before without any issues. I havent used them yet but I recently bought some of those Pro-Flo Filtero filters @BH#103 spoke about because like he said, they are basically identical to the K&N's only cheaper. Next oil change I'll be using one

I use on my antiquated twin cam , the Mobil 1 M102 .. I used the K&N 171 before , but without fail , the nut strips trying to remove the filter .. There's some evidence out there , if you look , that shows K&N is over rated , at least with the air filters ..

I used the K&P Engineering reusable filter on my previous RG for a lot of miles without issue. I really liked the big magnet built into it for catching fine metallic particles, but cleaning it was a messy process. I recently switched all my oils over to Amsoil and have been using their filter. I can buy a lot of filters for the cost of that one reusable one.

I am using an reusable Arlin Ness oil filter, which is made by proflow. I do a lot of oil changes, which justifies the expense, I do not recommend this oil filter for everybody, as some people don't change their oils as often as others. One good hard ass weekend, and I'm doing three oils. I've been doing this ever since I own the bike, which is why when I drop my oil it still looks brand new!!! Oil excessive Maybe? But it's what works for me, as I am hard on anything that has a gas powered motor, my poor Avalanche with 300,2000 miles on it. I've Loved this truck ever since I bought it new, and yes I do the same thing on oil changes with my truck!

I used 171 C K&N filters for years, for the price and what you get is well worth the extra money. I just thought it was in my better interest to make a switch....

I too use a reusable oil filter from k and p engineering. Was made for the oil bud cooler that I never used and got ripped off from. The owner did have a good idea/concept to incorporate a drain plug into the filter. Bought 2, one for use and the other to replace so that I have no downtime in between service…
