So I carefully removed the key switch in the fork lock position because I was starting to remove the forks to install my Patriot spring kit. Of course the forks locked when happened to move the forks hard over. I tried to reinstall the switch and had a hell of a time key was jamming up, so a little 3in 1 oil did wonders!
Anyway I called my Indy he stated that the switch should be removed in the accessory position! So I tried this and it came out and I could swing the bars hard over with out locking the forks of course.
So question is what is the correct pos to remove the switch? Seems like every video shows it in the lock position when there removing it. Thanks!

I always remove mine pointing left at the locked position but with the handlebars still pointing forward. Once removed, I then insert the alignment tool below, and leave it in while the ignition is out to ensure everything stays aligned. If you inadvertently turn the bars and lock it, the tool also allows you to unlock it….. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087DYGMKS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It can be done with a large flat blade screw driver, what you do is get a flashlight and look down into the ignition hole you will see slots, stick the screwdriver in and try to line up all the slots together it is a pain in the ass but can be done, the alignment tool that rooster suggested, makes it a lot easier. If you're trying it with the flat blade screwdriver, you have to take your time and be patient with it, you'll eventually get it I know I spent 35 minutes or so trying to get it when I first took the ignition off for the first time without alignment tool. I now own an alignment tool because I got so pissed off on how long it took to get everything aligned with the flat blade screwdriver, just be patient take a deep breath and you'll get it........good luck

I actually did remove and install it in the 3 o'clock or (accessory position) was able to depress button with finger.
What I can't understand is why this mobile HD mechanic would tell me to turn it to the accessory position, when every video (and you guys) say turn it to the fork lock pos. Either this mechanic can't tell time! Or it can actually be removed in either position but everyone just does one way.

From your experience, you say you did it - so it must be true.
And - I gotta think there is a good reason for doing it the way "everyone else" states.

I dunno. But if you were able to......then Bob's your uncle!

To me the good reason is because that’s how it tells you to do it in the service manual. On top of the the other way just seems like a PITA. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also by doing it as the book says... there's nothing powered up when it's in the "Lock" position. Might not be an issue... until you can't get it back in.

just because you can do something don't mean you should...
