I'm thinking about new paint for Hester. I want to stay with the Scarlett red, but I really like the pearl-like finish I've seen inn yellow and white.

My question is can such a pearl feature be added to any color of paint? I'll find a qualified local painter (Dallas, Texas area) to do the work this fall. I'm just mulling over options at this point.

Any insight appreciated.

Yes you can use a pearl over any color, it depends on the effect you are going for and the color of pearl you want to use.

Thanks Frankie! I want a subtle pearl effect that you have to get close up to see, but I don't want to diminish the depth of the Scarlett red or make it look pink.

Be careful if you're painting it yourself. I've seen "red pearl" colors come out looking like a shade of pink

I'll leave it up to a pro! I can wrench a bit, but I don't mess with paint!

A red xirallic pearl over the scarlet would work well. You can control how subtle you want it by the amount of pearl you apply. Most of the CVO paint colors use xirallic pearl.

I been thinking of pearl myself ,, but I'm thinking two tone leaving the black with a pearl on the bottom half of the fairing and breaking up the tank , bags and covers with it as well .. But I'm getting brave and pondering doing my own shooting

How much paint will it take to do the entire bike ??

a couple gallons ??

A qt or two per color, depends on how well it covers and the color of your primer/sealer.

I'm staying sub'd to this thread. Having Shark Week in Texas will save me big bucks in gas that I can apply to the paint work. I'll do the dis assembly/reassembly work myself. That's part of the fun.

I want a different front fender also; same wheel and tire size, though. Also considering picking up a spare set of saddle bags so I can have a set for obnoxious audio and a set for travel.

From an industry paint source...if this helps.

Know how the color you’re creating will reflect in the sunlight: Since pearl paint uniquely reflects light, you must be careful about what colors and amounts to select.

If the base coat that you are using is red, orange, or burgundy then the most recommended pearl coat is gold. Other options are red, blue, or violet pearls. When using a blue base, stick with gold, violet, or green pearl. A yellow base coat tends to look best with a green or gold pearl paint. Orange, red, and gold typically turn out great on a green base. A pink base will look very nice with silver or even red as the pearl paint. The purple base paint goes well with silver, green, or red pearl paint.
The final step, applied after the base and pearl coats is a clear coat. It is important to note that the clear coat should only be placed over custom paint and not over faux finish or powder coating.

On this 2010 scarlet red RG I took the "crimson sunglo" special effect layer pearl and put it over the properly prepped stock scarlet red, we called it "scarlet crimson" the sunglo effect is more full of life and sparkle than regular pearls.

Customer was very happy and likes how his bike stands out when next to all the other scarlet bikes.

I also did some gold leaf work on the lids, tank and outer/inner fairing,

I had just finished the rear bike and the one in front was getting the crimson sunglo work.
