I'm aware you are asking your question irt racing performance, but I do a stage one upgrade (A/C, exhaust, tune) so as my touring bike runs stronger for two-up touring and so as the engine is running at it's most efficient and not just to EPA standards.

regards,

I don't race either, but I have done stage one, full exhaust and tuned all my bikes and hell yes they run stronger.

I would agree with the feeling that the bike runs better. Not sure it's any more efficient though. I'd probably need to define that. In my experience with motorcycles, the engines last longer in the stock config with proper maintenance. The more the pendulum swings toward performance, the farther it gets from durability.

I went with a SE A/C, Rineharts slip-ons (for a better sound) & HD remap. I'm happy with how it turned out. I suggest you do a search on here, then you'll really be confused. A tune, A/C & slip-ons will help your bike run cooler & better. Good Luck.

Stock vs Upgrade

The person, IMO, that best addresses this question is THE DOCTOR. That would be Dr. Dyno, an expert tuner from Connecticut. He has written several articles for American Iron magazine that answers the question. If you care to read these articles they are on his website, DrDyno.com - the "Feel the Difference" therapy for your motorcyle. The short answer is, add on tuners properly set up or better yet a professional dyno tune make the bike perform at it's best and you can feel the difference. The bike runs smoother in all situations whether it be cruising the highway or getting into the throttle at take off or passing situations. Tuning for peak HP is good if you are racing your bike but that is not how most of us ride.

I did a stage 1 on my 2015 about a week after I got it. Its smoother, faster, and runs cooler.

I had mine for around 6,000 miles before I did the Stage 1, so I was quite familiar with how it ran.

Did Vance & HInes Pro Pipe, stock baffle, SE Ventilator A/C, SEPST Smart Tune.

The difference is huge. No, it won't lift the front wheel with a roll-on, but trust, me, when I run it to 6,000 in first and nail it into second, the difference between this and stock is huge.

In terms of dollars spent versus results, the Stage 1 is the best bang-for-the-buck engine mod you can do. If you look for deals in the classifieds and/or on Ebay and Craigslist, you can get a flash tuner, slip-ons, a headpipe, and an air cleaner for well under a grand, and it makes a difference you can feel.

There's more power, the bike runs smoother and cooler, and it gets better gas mileage. There's no downside. Any gains after a Stage 1 require more money, more labor, and don't make as much of a difference. Remember that this is a 900 pound motorcycle.
