Ok, would love love to have the #3 Ohlins but getting to around $800 and have nothing left for the fronts..

...so figuring 940s or the # 2s and a set of monotubes for a little less than the rears alone would suffice (yes I said "suffice").

The Ohlin 2s are a little more than $100 up from the 940s...(install $ there unless I try and do myself)

Front monos and rear 940s settling in around $700 (460 / 240)

Was kind of waiting for the 944s to come out and hoping the 940s would go on clearance..hard to wait..hate the stockers...pogosticking...

Have to think about taking the front down 1", but I think I am going to leave the height alone..Im 230, 5'11'...

Looking for anyone with experience with the #2s vs 940s?

Worth the $100?

Suspension

MasterGuns - I'm just starting to consider mods to my 2011 FLTRUSE suspension and am not as far along as you seem to be. What is the chief complaint with your current setup? Bike?

I haven't modded at all..front end dives hard, rear end ...best I can describe is wallows around corners, especially with 2 up...was riding with my 11 year old and the bike was almost bouncing around the corner, up and down, sideways...very odd feeling...then over large dips on highway its like a pogostick effect..

doesnt matter the # applied pressure...keeping it at 35 for me and 40 2 up...

I cant speak to the Ohlins 2s, but Im sure they are an excellent shock and based on reputation probably a bit higher end than most of the other stuff out there. But like many things I had to ask myself if I would really feel the difference? I went with the 940 because of my past experience with them on my Fatboy and Sportster , the $100 savings over Ohlins 2-2a , and the lifetime warranty. With Ohlins there is a need to rebuild them based on factory recommendations and that is a cost of $ 150 -200 based on what Ive read, with the 940 its free only the cost of one way shipping to Progressive.

But I can comment on the 940 and monotube setup. First IMO the 940 are a big improvement over the stock HD air shocks. They will soften out the bumps and potholes and greatly reduce or eliminate bottoming out, in the corners they greatly improve the overall handling and feel for the road, more responsive. I added the 940 abou a week before doing the monotubes so I was able to see that the 940 by them selfs made a great improvement. Them adding the monotubes did very much the same for the front end, reduced dive, no bottoming out and a better feel for the road.

Overall I have no regrets and an very satisfied with the performance of my Progressive suspension and would do the same again.

If you decide to go with the 940 at your weight if you dont ride 2 up very much you may need to swap to the lighter springs to get the best out of the shocks. I have a couple threads on here about it . The 940 come setup for HD weight limits and a solo rider at around 210 -220 or less is on the light side .

I find it hard to believe the the 940s wouldn't give you a choice of springs right off the bat...that adds $40 right away if its too stiff...which it looks like happens to most here...

Wonder if the 940 price will dump when the 944s show up?

I have the same issue trying to wait out the 940 price or wait on the 944. I wrote Progressive and the Tech said that the 944 and 940 were the same basic shock. I think he said the 944 was about 60 days out.

It adds 10.95 the cost to ship it one way via flat rate box. Progressive pays for return shipping and does everything else free of charge and has one day turn around. I just did mine.

Your right on the money Jeff. One way shipping USPS flat rate priority less than 10.00

The last time I talked to frank at progressive he said they might be offering the lighter spring in the future. The 940 is designed for the true touring set up more often than not loaded with luGgage or 2 up so the hd springs work for a lot more riders than not.

Overall IMO the 940 is a great deal, lifetime warranty , the travel of a full length 13 shock with the look of the 12" shock.

I don't think they are or have quite the technology of a set of 3-3 Olin's but they are a huge improvement over the stock shocks and probably as good a shock as most of us will ever need and at almost 40% less than the high end shocks with no additional expense when they need rebuilding.

The main difference with the 940 and the 944 is the 944 is a aluminum body shock and uses a different damping valve will it really be a better shock only time will tell. Where are a lot of 440 and 940'out there on bikes with satisfied riders.

I've had both and I think they are both over rated. The spring on the 940 was way too stiff for my 190 lb and now I'm having the same problem with the Ohlins. My bike is a Road Glide without a trunk.

I think a better P-S shock to compare to the Ohlins would be the 440, not the 940. The 940 is made with extra sag to make for a lower ride height, once the weight of the rider is applied. The 440 is a full ride height shock, as is the Ohlins. No point in sacrificing bottoming clearance, unless you need it.

I would look at motorcyclemetal.com and give Howard a call to discuss the Ohlins - If the price difference is $100, you will get a custom shock from Howard. How that matches up to the progressives I don't know, but Custom sounds like a plan. My #3-3's arrive on Tuesday............

I've run the 940's & monotubes and the Ohlin's #3's & monotubes ,the 940's were good but the Ohlin's is worlds better , I know a few guys with the Ohlin's #2's , Howard sells them for around $540 , these shocks deliver a great ride too and should not be considered a cheap shock , they are much better than the 940's also
