I am planning on upgrading my suspension.

My question is...Which should I do 1st, the 940's or the Monoshocks. ( I am thinking the 1 inch drop)

Which will give me more bang for the buck for my initial purchase?

Planning a trip out to Utah to see the Upper Rockies and the Teton's and then a week in Colorado in Sept. We will trailer out then ride for 2 weeks 2-up.

Otherwise I am mostly solo.

Just got done the first ride with monotubes and 940 an hour ago. (2011 RGC)

DO BOTH!

If it's not in the budget I guess you gotta go shocks first. Hit a couple of good bumps today that sent a shot up the spine but nothing like the way the back end would hop with the stock air shocks. As for the front - WOW - no more front end dive when you brake hard - confidence inspiring. I can ride harder and deeper into turns - loved it.

I just installed 940's on my RGU.
I had no issue with the air shocks ride. I needed a little bit better footing so after 20K I made the change.
Put 200 miles on the bike today with a lot of starts and stops I wanted to be sure .
The inch gain worked for me, hard to understand how just an inch can make such a difference .
No plans to do anything with the front.

Okay well I went ahead and bit the bullet thanks to Harley Direct's pricing and the fact they take Paypal I was able to pay with my Bill Pay which gives me 6 months no interest so I went ahead and got both.

Put the rears on last night and heading out for a 600 mile test drive in the morning with the wife.

I didn't have time to put the mono's on up front but hope to do that when I get back. That was my plan till the better half decided she wanted to make a road trip with some friends this weekend.

Never turn down a road trip.

I head out in 3 hours. Can't sleep! :eek:

Well Friday night Memorial day weekend I got home from work @ 7:45, Had the 940's on by 8:30. Had the wife help me measure the SAG and did a ruff guesstamet as to what it would be with her on the bike as well.

Saturday 7:00 AM were out the door heading out for a long weekend 3 day ride with some friends. Went to Rodney MS. or rather where Rodney MS used to be. It is a ghost town now. Apparently it was a Port on the Mississippi river a few hundred years ago but the river diverted itself as it does quiet often geologically speaking. So no more port. Actually the river is now 4 miles away.

I can't say I recommend the ride there as it ends up with a 3 mile poorly maintained gravel road but after nearly 300 miles to see it we proceeded with caution.

Anyway on the way out we took a spill as the gravel shifted and the front tire acted more like a plow than a wheel.

Fortunately the crash guards front and the new ones for the bags I just recently put on did there job and the bike did not sustain any damage.

I have a bruise or two and the Better Half ended up with a fractured tibia and is now in a splint. going to see the ortho Dr. in AM. I think the rear crash guard hit her ankle on the way down. Could be much worse. We both wear protective gear, ie padded jackets, full helmets etc.

Anyway... the 940's made the trip much better, the bike handled much better and tracked the curves waay better than before. No regrets putting them on.

Got the bike front end disassembled today for the Monotube's but I couldn't find any 20 weight oil which is what progressive is calling for now. I will have to wait till the morning to buy some a the HD shop.

Wife was very impressed with the smoothness of the 940's especially on the emergency run home yesterday as every bad bump shot pain through her leg. It would have been excruciating without them, She said the ride was not bad at all with them, even with the broken ankle.

I'm thinking I will drop the front 2 inches rather than the more popular 1 inch. Hope to have it all back together tomorrow and get in a short ride. I am also doing my 50,000 mile service.

Sorry to hear about the wife; hope she heals well. I would love a good write-up on the 2" drop if you go that direction...

Well got it all finished today and out for a short ride. I decided on 1-1/2 inch drop after talking to one of the Progressive reps. So I put the longer spring for one inch drop then used 2 spacers in place of using the shorter spring which gave me 1- 1/2 inch. If I had gone on and done the 2 inch I would have had to stiffen up the pre-load so I think the 1-1/2 was a good compromise.

It is definitely lower as now I have to wiggle my jack out from under the bike when I let it down and the dips were I drug before drags a bit harder now but not a problem as it is only going out of the driveway.

Handleing is greatly improved, good feel, very responsive and solid. More sport-touring feeling to me.

Out of curiosity I measured the oil that came out of my forks. The manual say it should be 11.1 oz. or 22.+ oz. total. Mine only came to just shy of 16 oz. so basically 25% short. No wonder the front felt so soft.

Well after 2 phone calls to progressive I decided to send the 940's back in for some softer springs.
They felt great for their maiden voyage riding 2 up but when solo they are a bit stiff.

I could only get my sag to 3/8 inch at the softest sitting. They reccommend 3/4 or 6/8th's so softer springs will allow me to taylor my sag to where I want it not to just in the ball park.
