A none HD riding buddy, I'm working on him, and I are going to the AMA swap meet in Lexington OH. We will be coming from St. Louis. Any good recommendations for roads to ride on our way or way back? Right now we are looking at 50 to Cincinnati and then 71 to Lexington. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Be prepared for boredom taking 50 across Illinois. Especially from Salem, IL to Vincennes, IN. That is a long, straight, boring road! But not much choice unless you want to drop down to the southern portion of Illinois.
50 will take you straight through Loogootee, IN and once you go about 5 miles east of there drop down on hwy 150 to French Lick, IN. You'll take 150 to hwy 56 and drop down a few mile to French Lick. Cool ride and cool town.
You can then go back up to 150 and take it over to Louisville, KY and catch 71 from there. Or go back up to 50 and continue your ride.

A few summers back, I used to ride Columbus, OH to St. Peters, MO about every other weekend. If you want the Interstate way, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take I-70. Especially in Indiana, way too many trucks playing leapfrog. The highway is in not too great shape either. Although, they are doing a major fixup between Indy and Terre Haute. I-70 in Illinois is a 5 Snooze Button bore.

I always went I-71, down to Louisville, then over on I-64. It was longer, but took about the same amount of time (less trucks, better highway), and it was a much nicer ride.

Pretty much what Pacfan said about the Indiana part. I haven't been on the Illinois part but can tell you the 150 road is a great ride. Once in Louisville though you can jump on I65 North to either I265 East/State Route (SR) 62 East to SR62 East. Take this road until it Ts into SR56. Turn east on SR56 to Madison, IN. This is a pretty cool small town on the Ohio River. After leaving town you can stay on SR56 East and follow the Ohio River to Aurora, IN. There are some detour signs on SR56 but it is only closed thru the town of Aurora. You can get around it by using streets thru town. You will then want to hit US50 East to Lawrenceburg. You can stay on 50 all the way to Cincinnati or jump on I275 to get to either I71 or I75 to head towards Lexington. If your timing is right I may be able to meet you and escort you from at least Madison or maybe Louisville!
If interested just shoot me a PM.
