Hey guys, I am in the market for a cam for my 2012 RG w/ a 103, how much is too much cam lift. I don't want to go too big and have to replace lifters every winter, but I do want to get as much as I can get by with. I see HD uses a 550 lift on the popular 255 cam I would assume this is safe to keep the bike in warranty... I know they will take more than that but at what cost?

I suggest you do the search for cams on this site. You'll get all kinds of info. Educated your self & do a web search for cams & see what kind of changes your looking for. Good luck.

Like the other 2 stated, do a search. There are more factors to look at than just "lift" on a cam. Learning to read a cam's specs will tell you how the cam will perform, what power range it will work in and such. Call Frank at Drago bike Works to get started.

The lift is only one part of the equation in order to select a cam.
Intake closing numbers that do not match your compression ratio can actually have your bike with less power than it currently does now.
After doing this for 3 decades, drag racing AHDRA and ECRA for almost a 10 year period, and working on motorcycles since 1978, we have the answers to your questions.

like hillside said,lift is probably the LEAST important part of choosing cams.timing & duration is much more important to get the power in the RPM range you want it in

The stock heads with stock valve springs are good to .600 lift max.
I wouldn't go much more than .555 with stock valve springs just because I wouldn't want my valve springs at max.
IMO .555 lift is plenty on these engines unless you are doing a monster build.

I have the same bike and my Harley guy recommended the Harley SE-254E cam. I already have stage 1 and doing header when I do cams. Like everybody else said do your research and talk to people that know our motors and what they can handle without going crazy.

ide bump the compression to 10.0-1 and go with the S&S .570 over the SE 254E.the .570 wont hit quite as low as the 254E,but will carry higher and give VERY good power in your useable RPM range (def. stay away from the 255)

I have the 254E cam in my bike, was installed free under a warr. issue I had when the bike had 1K miles on it. I'm completely happy with it given to me free of charge, but if I paid for it myself I would've chosen a slightly more aggressive cam myself, but again I'm happy and will not spend the money swapping it out. Sounds good, performs much better over stock too.

For a plug/play, cam only, for instance, a Wood 222 is a prime candidate for that 103.

I agree about the 255 it has to be an EPA cam for it to be a stock item...
