I'm taking the bike to the paint shop. Everything is there except the two shells for the lower fairings.

Trying to get the lower fairing shell off without removing the entire cooling system. The HD manual says it is possible, but given the problem, I can't even get to the cooling system.

There are two screws at the bottom of each inner-portion of the lower fairing (directly in front of where my toes sit). The screws, two on each side, just spin in place. On the outer side of the fairing (when the vent is removed) I can see 4 'washers' spinning.

The dealership is more than happy to let me pay them to tow it to them so they can remove 4 screws, but the manual says it's possible so I see no need to do so absent my having screwed something up.

Any ideas? Special tool needed for these?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Following this with interest. I'm not sure how you would do it, but they (dealership) do tell me that head work on the RGU M8 engines requires cooling system disassembly.

The radiator grille in front pops off, similar to the speaker grille. I believe it will give you access to the screws.

lower fairing removal ~ answer to the puzzle

I went to the dealership and they walked me through the disassembly process; the lower fairing casings can be removed without taking apart the cooling system (section 6-10 of HD manual shows you how).

The answer to my dilemma was "manufacturer's defect". There are brass "nuts" holding the screws in place. During the manufacturing process, the brass part is heated up, then melted into the plastic fairing where it is supposed to be secure.

Whomever did the 4 on mine did not do them properly and that is why they spin in place when I turn the screws.

If not for the manufacturing defect, would have been an easy 15 minute job to take the fairing covers apart.

Solution:
If you have a warranty: the dealership breaks the entire lower fairing and you get a replacement.

If you do not have a warranty: drill out the brass piece, substitute the pieces with a nut, bolt, and washer that fits (per the mechanic at the shop)

Mine is under warranty, so I will be getting two new lower fairings....then get to take them to the paint shop.

I have the same problem with the headlight and marker light covers on my big truck. What I do is slowly wedge the pieces apart while turning the screws. The brass ferrel will either pull out of its recess, or it will thread off. The ones that pull out I reinstall with JB Weld and put Never Size on the screws. Takes some time but saves the part.
