Dear Road Glide Community:

I am completely new to the HD community, and have put a deposit on an '11 RGU for delivery in Feb. 2011. I've test ridden the '10 Street Glide and an '09 Roadie prior to settling on the RGU, which appears to be an outstanding value when you consider all of the features included as standard. Here's my question: how difficult is it to detach the TourPak, in the event that I want to remove it from time to time? Is it a quick detach unit, or does it require an afternoon of wrenching?

If it has the quick detach mount on it, it pops on and off real easy.
Yes,.. if you plan on removing it a lot, buy the quick detach kit. Removing the stock setup on and off is a huge pain, and yes it will tie up a lot of time. The quick detach stuff, will pay for itself in no time.

It's not standard.
But it is so nice when the Detachable Mounting Kit is installed. I have it on my Tour Pak. You can see my RG Tour Pak in my signature.
One thing that makes it better is thE Harley "Boom Audio Music and Intercom Kit" (77108-09A) when used with the the Detach Kit on the Tour Pak. It moves the controls for the Passenger Intercom to the fender and makes it usable when the TP is removed.
I also moved the Antennas inside the Fairing so I didn't need to unplug them and hide the wires. Just the TP lights and speaker wires. It is clean.
I still have the Fuel Tank rider hook up. I didn't want the double sided tape stuck to the fuel tank. Look at the kit and you will see.

Here is the pdf file for the instructions from Harley.

Thanks for your thorough and reassuring response. I'll be sure to add the quick detach kit and antenna relocation kit for my RGU. sounds like it's well worth the investment for avoiding a a time consuming project when I want to be riding. Thanks to all of you!

Does anyone know the exact cost of the detachable kit for the 2011 RGU? I can assume the kit includes all the harness disconnects and antenna relocation hardware. I got a quote to have it installed.

Happy Holidays!

Detachable Tour Pak Kit(chrome)53246-09a,$549.95
Quick Disconnect Harness for Ultra Models,70032-09,$79.95
Only problem is the RG Ultra does not have a mounting bracket welded on the right side saddlebag inside rail for the CB Antenna.Didn't hook it up on mine,I am going to make my own bracket.Hope this helps.Ride safe!

All this plus tax. Oh and don't forget, you'll probably be buying a backrest for when the tourpac is off. That will run you another 3 bills.

Thanks for the info Roadie. The Kit is up there in price. I got a pretty good quote installed from my dealer considering the kit cost. $750 out the door. I have to see how many hours labor.

Detachable is the way to go, but be sure that when it is wired up it is done for the "detachable" setup, i.e. plugs. Mine has detachable hardware but the dealership "hard wired" the tour pak to the bike. It's not a big deal, but pretty much defeats the purpose of having a detachable tour pak. lol.
