Thinking about added saddle bag speakers, but I do a lot of traveling, and get caught in the rain a lot. Worried how they would hold up.

Lowers are the way to go for riders listening... I have lids... did them first, then added lowers.

Go with lowers.... much better than lids by a long shot. I can't hear my lids at all now...lol

On another forum, the same subject is going on. I can only comment on my setup and it ABSOLUTELY makes a difference. 80mph and I can hear the lids, faded it to the rear and I can hear them loud and clear. Another time,I had a connection come loose in one of the bags and I knew it right away when I lost sound.
This is my experience with my setup. If you don't have much power going to them then you probably won't hear them.
I don't have lowers so I can't comment on them or compare them to the lids.

IMHO, it depends on how much you travel and carry. My 10 has speakers in the lids, as stated at speed you can't hear them as well as lowers, unless you're pushing a few watts, and if you have that much power, chances are you have an amp in the bags also. I have 3 amps in my fairing in order to free up bag space, but 4 6x9 speakers still use a little room. On my 16 and 17 I went with amp in the fairing and all speakers in the fairing and lowers. I can hear everything just fine and have all the space in my bags.

I have Moto 600.4 amp and two Arc 602 speakers, uppers and lowers and while moving I can hear my system at any speed. While moving, the louder I have it the better it sounds but, not moving it is missing something, Like base. I really have no base and it sounds a bit distorted while not moving. Very odd, Loud as heck but not the clean sound I was hopping for. Of course some songs are better than others. I am thinking of adding the Arc decoder to see if this will help the cleanliness of the sound. I am also contemplating rear speakers to provide more base.

@1cool71 , totally off topic but where are you getting all of your BBP parts painted? Had a local guy up here in NNY paint a 21in wrap fender but charged me 450 bucks. Quality is good but not sure if that was a fair asking price. I will eventually put on speaker lids, new bags, and new rear fender, so need to get a paint guy locked in.

You may not believe this but my lower bags and lids, fender and spoiler are all painted with SPRAY CANS!!:surprise:
I bought cans from Color-rite and then cleared and buffed it.
Nobody know the difference but it does take some time and patience

I use the rockford fosgate amp for my front speakers
