my 05 RG with 32,000 miles has a bad knocking sound - the mechanic at
my local H-D shop says it's the primary chain too loose and hitting the
cases - well that's not it - then they pulled the cam chest case off to check the cam chain tensioner - the tensioners look brand new (red line 20-60 hd)
every 2500 mi . - - now they want to replace the compensater
under the esp , but if that's not the problem they think it might be a rod bearing, BUT they said to pull the top end off and it's NOT the rod bearing - I have to pay for the 6 hours to pull top end - if it is the rod bearing then the plan will have to pay for the 6 hours to pull top end - so it's a crap shoot - is this typical of them guessing what knocking problem is and i might have to pay
for them to tear things apart and not find the problem ?? plus i was told I
could just ride it until it blows, then they'll know what the knocking is !
is this they way other shops handle the service plan ? THANKS

That doesn't sound right, if their guess is wrong you shouldn't have to pay.

So you have a service plan and they want you to pay for a so called mechanic who doesn't know what he's doing? I'd have a big problem with that. Maybe go to another dealer? Let us know how this works out.

Yeah, that.

The ESP requires the dealer to contact the plan provider, and get approval before ANY work is performed. Almost sounds like they didn't do that part.

Get the claim #, call he # on your card, you may be on hold awhile, it's worth it, or get the claim# from them, don't hesitate to call, they can be on your side, and have the say on re-embursment, caution on switching where works done, its what the dealer tells em sense or not.

service plan update

ok so i got the bike back - they replaced the compensator - - the
cam tensioners look brand new - i saw them - - the service manager
said the motor sounds tighter than most bikes that come in (32,000 mi)
- riding home i can still hear the occational knocking sound - my oil
pressure is about 36-38 lbs - 6 lbs more than usual when going down the road - at idle it's at 32 - - it was usually around 20 something - - what the heck
so i decide to change the motor oil - i pull the plug with the magnet and
its full of shavings - - so lets see, top end knocking and more shavings
than i've ever seen on magnet - - is it the dealer doesn't want to spend
the time to chase after the problem - just wait till it blows??

In a bike with 32k miles you definitely shouldn't be seeing any shavings, and if they replaced the compensator, we all know that has nothing to do with your engine oil. I say they definitely didn't fix the problem and are waiting for a catastrophic failure to see what's wrong, easier to fix, JMO.
