Need help planning our trip 2018 trip out west . I plan on hitting Shark Week VIII for a couple days , Sturgis ( haven’t been in 38 years ) , and also WY , Montana ( Chief Joseph , Yellowstone etc ) . My problem is because of work ( busiest time of year ) I only have about 10 days or so, to “do it all “. So a 3 day ride from FLA , & 3 days back is out of the question . Once I decide how to get my shark out there ( Ship it , or trailer out w/ couple friends driving straight thru non - stop ) . What itinerary would you recommend. I want to ride the Sturgis / Badlands area also , but not with all the crazy traffic during the rally . I know you can spend months riding out there , but I need to do it all in about 10 days ... lol !
PS: any feed back on renting a bike from Eagle Rider .membership $29 / month & receive 1 free rental per month . Can use use free rental all at once ? ( around or during Sturgis , the rentals are approx $150 / day out of Denver ) Sorry for the long post & thx for your advice . Capt Tom

Ride the three days out, hit all your spots and then check out some great PNW riding through Idaho on your way to Seattle, drop your sled off with me, fly back to your job in florida and I’ll take some extra days off and ride it home for you myself then I’ll fly back to Seattle. I won’t even ask you for gas or a plane ticket. Yeah, I know, it’s a lot to ask of me but hey, that’s the generous kind of guy I am. No thanks necessary btw.

I've had the same dilemma for years. My advice: drive out trailered w a friend, maybe not straight thru but at least turn 3+ days into 1.5 days. It's easy to think about hitting as many spots as possible bc the chance to get there is so rare. I've done trips where I rode as many places and miles as I could, just to say I saw it. Also done trips that were--like the Beach Boys said--"Get there fast, then we'll take it slow." The second option has by far been the better choice for memory making. Get to take time to relax and share the experience with people. My 2 cents.

And if MightyWhitey won't take your ride back, I will! Haha #shotgun

Ship your pants!! And your bike. it can be done. Buy, borrow or liberate a HD shipping crate, strap your bike in and ship it to a dealer in Denver, easy to fiy into.

Here is your flight Itinerary out of Tampa, FL; https://goo.gl/flights/VSnr

Here is your loop ride: https://goo.gl/maps/VLSYspvD6mE2

to get the most out of your trip and use the least days off, fly into Denver on Monday July 30. Pickup your bike and ride to Durango. Take in the Shark Week fun. Leave early, early on Friday Aug 3 and head to Cody, WY. Long days ride but it can be done. You can stage out of Cody for 2 nights and ride the Chief Joseph and Beartooth over and back in one day, doing the road twice, Go to the Rodeo the 2nd night in Cody. Sunday August 5, head east toward Sturgis; do a couple days there and then head back to Denver, crate your bike at the dealer and ship it home.

The trailer and ride option is there, recommend from experience have a trailer with 4 bikes and and crew cab truck with 4 drivers, keep a tight schedule, driving straight thru sucks but it does buy some time. Truck cab can get kinda funky after 30 some hours of full time occupation.

Gas split 4 ways will still add up and if you can't find enough bikes and drivers to go will probably equal return airfare in the long run.

Use extreme caution renting from Eagle Rider. Their cancellation policy is extremely strict and they require prepayment up front. Cancellation only allowed if one of the following met: 1. Military deployment after booking 2. Pregnancy after booking 3. Confirmed medial diagnosis that prevents riding or death (certificate required in each case). Once they have your money they like to keep it.

Renting from a HD dealer is better and their cancellation policies are usually much better. Always, read the fine print in the "Terms and Conditions" part of their websites.

I had planned to rent a bike from an Eagle Rider affiliate earlier this year. When I went to pick the bike up it was an older model year bike than was advertised and had 40K+ miles on it (and all of the attendant damage to the seat, gauges and body that you would expect on a bike that had been used as a rental by countless previous riders). To me it just didn't appear safe or comfortable. I decided to rent a car instead. Your experience may be different, that's just my personal experience.

I’ve rented a few times from eaglerider and so far the bike has been the same model year as I rented in and in decent shape. True they like to keep your money but I was given any week within the year to use it when I had some unexpected changes. Not sure I’d recommend them for a long trip rental though.

I'm in the same boat Captain .... 10 days is all I got! Man is work, small kids and a mean wife a drag!! This is my first trip to Stugis so me and three buddies are riding out hanging for 3 days and then hauling cookies back to PA! I know the riding out there is amazing and the various bars and what not are a blast but for us the excitement of the journey is more important than the destination. That being said we are planning another trip to Stugis down the road but this time we are trailering our bikes out and than riding our asses off there!

Good luck!

Capttom, if you do beartooth, you can come back to Cody without riding the hill again. Just a thought. Beartooth is a must, Redlodge is a pretty cool spot to spend a couple hours, or an evening,WR.

I think Eagle is your only option now when renting. I think they do all the renting for Dealerships. If you go to HDs site and click "Rent a Bike" and put in a location, it sends you to Eagle. It's still at a dealer in a lot of cases but separate from HD

Ship to a dealership and fly. This year with family tragedies that I had to take off for I have only 1 week for Sharkweek. I was planning on taking more time and doing Sturgis again. Trying to ride to Sharkweek and back and spending some time there won't work. I'm shipping my bike to Albuquerque, New Mexico riding to Durango. Spending the week riding and enjoying ourselves and flying home. I'm using Haulbikes. It actually is cheaper to ship and fly to Denver.
