SoundStream Pre-Rushmore HDHU.9813RG HU Problems

You guys that have upgraded to the SoundStream pre-Rushmore HDHU.9813RG head unit, after you’ve had a chance to get some miles with it, let me know if you’re experiencing any of the following issues:

1- CarPlay will intermittently disconnect… Works great for a while, then loses connection. I’ll unplug the USB and it will reconnect, only to lose connection again in a few miles……. I’ve tried multiple cables and same problem. Even called Volunteer Audio and dude told me I needed a short, no longer than 1’ high speed data / charge cable, and he sent me one. This seemed to solve my issue for a couple rides, but now it’s happening again. And I know it’s not my phone because I never get CarPlay disconnects in my car or truck…….

In my testing, the disconnects seem to possibly be related to having a good cell signal. Where I ride, cell coverage is very spotty, and I think I’m losing CarPlay when my phone goes in and out of cell coverage. Last ride I put my phone into airplane mode (which shuts off cell service) at the start of my ride, and CarPlay worked fine and never disconnected once all day…. So my conclusion is that the SoundStream doesn’t need cell service for CarPlay to work, but when your phone goes in and out of cell coverage, it jacks up the CarPlay connection……. But not having at least some cellular connection kinda defeats the purpose of having CarPlay (streaming music, etc). I’m not too worried about navigation because I use a great nav app which has off-line maps on my phone and doesn’t need a cell signal, but I woul like to be able to use Waze and other “live” apps when I’m out on the major highways for traffic and police notifications…..

2 -After riding for about 30 minutes, my left handlebar control volume up button stops working. Volume up still works fine on the SoundStream touch screen, just won’t work on the handlebar control……. Volume down on the handlebar control never stops working….. Weird……. To reiterate, initially both volume up and down handlebar controls work perfect, but after 30 minutes (give or take) the volume up button stops responding…..

At first I thought the CarPlay disconnect and volume up problem were related, but last week I went for a ride and never plugged in my phone and only listened to FM radio on the SoundStream. And yup, after a while the volume up handlebar control stopped working.

Curious to see if anyone else has these or similar or other issues with the pre-Rushmore HDHU.9813RG unit before I rattle the cage further with Volunteer Audio where I purchased the $1,000 fucking radio…….

I called this afternoon and spoke with Volunteer Audio again. If tech support was being straight with me, and after we talked for 15 minutes I believe they were, they say they have had zero CarPlay dropping complaints on any of the 2000+ Rushmore and pre-Rushmore Soundstream HU’s they have sold……. They seem to think it’s a problem with the lightning plug in my phone….. So to test that theory, I’m gonna take a ride here in a few days and use my sons iPhone and see if I have any issues….. I’m skeptical on their theory, but WTF do I know. We will see…..

I'm here to see the outcome, but I have read a bunch of 'software' issues with both the Rushmore and Pre-Rushmore new Soundstream decks thus far

I went through Chris at garage baggers for my unit so at least we have 2 different opinions. I won’t know anything till this weekend, might be as simple as the cord slightly falling out of the phone mine does when simply charging it. Did you run the USB to the glove box? If so try dampening the phone with a rag in there. Did they say anything about the volume issue?

Yes, I ran the USB to the glovebox……. They couldn’t give me any real insight into the volume up problem other than to say I might have a bad contact in my handlebar controller. When I explained it works 100% of the time at first, then just completely stops responding, they didn’t have much to suggest…..
Haven’t had a chance to ride again to do more testing, but the more I think about my problem, the more I’m calling bullshit on SoundStream……. I use my phone every day, and the same USB cord I’ve been using for 5 years in my pickup, and I’ve never had a CarPlay disconnect…….
A buddy of mine had an issue with a non Soundstream head unit but it would do the same thing with one cord. He replaced the cord and hasn't had an issue since. For what it's worth...

I’ve tried three different cords so far, all different brands and different lengths………

I’ve been scouring the web looking for a potential software update. So far found nothing.

What’s strange is when you goto the SoundStream
Website, there is no mention of the HDHU.9813RG head unit……. Plenty of automotive head units mentioned under their “Reserve” series (which the HDHU.9813RG falls under) but no mention of either the pre or post Rushmore motorcycle units…..

I should have time tomorrow and Im gonna try calling SoundStream direct…..

@Roosterman623 Kevin, what Model iPhone are You using and are You using the same one in Your other vehicles without issue? The iPhones I know are picky if You do not use a lightning cable.
There are also "Details" listed in the Soundstream Manual that gives You information re: Cell Phones and I will list "The Notes" from that below.
I hope this helps and Best of Luck Bro!
Mike U.
Notes:
  • Make sure you connect your iPhone 5 or newer to the HDHU.9813RG with an Apple certified Lightning-to-USB cable. Use a USB cable that is under 6' long and avoid using any extension cable.
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless music streaming cannot be used while Apple CarPlay is being used with a connected iPhone.
  • You cannot have an Android Auto smartphone and Apple CarPlay iPhone plugged in at the same time.

My phones an IPhone 13 Pro and has the latest software update. I’ve tried three different cables now, including a 12” high speed sync/charge cable that Volunteer Audio sent me when I first called them about my issues……

Did a hard re-boot of my phone today before a short 25 mile ride, and my CarPlay stayed connected the full ride….. But my left handlebar volume up button again stopped responding after 10 minutes. Same as before, volume down handlebar control still worked, just no up……. After I got home I turned off the bike, turned the ignition back to run, and volume up worked fine………. I’m still thinking theres software glitches with the SoundStream….

OK, now get this……. I found a number direct for SoundStream technical support and called them…. After waiting in queue for 27 minutes (no shit) finally got a live person. As soon as I stated my unit is a SoundStream Reserve HDHU.9813RG, dude stopped me and stated they offer no tech support for these “motorcycle radios” and that I would need to work with the company I purchased it from. I explained that I have gone down that road without satisfaction, but again he reiterated that SoundStream tech support cannot help me as an end user of the radio….. WTF is this bullshit……. Arghh. To say I’m frustrated at my purchase of this $1000 boat anchor is an understatement…….

So, started dicking around with my phone and USB cord on my bike, and found another rabbit hole I’m gonna go down to see if I can rectify this problem……. My phone is an iPhone 13 Pro which is a big phone and barely fits end to end inside the fairing cubby. With the USB cable plugged in, and the phone inside the cubby, the inside ribs of the cubby lid are putting slight pressure on the USB connector right where it plugs into the phone…….

So next ride I’m gonna try reversing the phone with the plug end of my phone facing forward towards the front of the cubby, and also may try wrapping the phone in a small towel to cushion it inside the cubby……. WTF it’s worth a try I guess……..

@Roosterman623 Kevin try putting a piece of Velcro on the back of Your iPhone then place it up against the inside wall of the cubby so this way it doesn’t move around. If You need to take the phone out just pull it from the wall and the other piece of Velcro will stay put for the next time You need to put Your phone there.
Hope this is understandable and helpful. Only other solution would be to mount the phone to Your handlebars.
Best of Luck Bro!

Well this plain sucks , I talked to Volunteer Audio today and was going to pull the trigger on this unit Monday but definitely am going to wait now. I am happy with my current set up but when we travel Wendy plans the routes and isn’t a huge fan of using Base Camp on the Garmin and said using the map/route apps with her i-phone is much easier. The one thing I didn’t like with this unit is it won’t Bluetooth to my Cardo Unit in my helmet I have to listen to the directions over the radio speakers.

I did 325 miles on the Bike Saturday and had issues again. As previously posted, I placed the phone in my cubby with the plug facing forward towards the front of the cubby, and also wrapped the phone in a rag to cushion it. Made it 20 miles and CarPlay dropped. Unplugged the USB, plugged it back in, CarPlay came up, and dropped again 10 miles later……. Kept the phone plugged in and didn’t do shit, and by its self it would reconnect to CarPlay then drop it again, back and forth several times over the next 100 miles……. Then on my last 100 miles home after stopping for lunch, plugged in the phone and CarPlay stayed connected all the way home, riding the same roads I was on earlier that morning when it kept dropping…

I have no fucking clue man. I feel like I’m on my own trying to figure this out because I can’t get any help from SoundStream, and Volunteer Audio says it’s my cable or my phone and say they have no other complaints of CarPlay disconnect issues with either the pre-Rushmore or the Rushmore units from anyone else who purchased the units………. My issue is if it is my cable or phone, why don’t I have issues with CarPlay in my truck using the same phone and cable? Just traveled 325 miles today in my truck for work, all the way to Mission TX, and not one single CarPlay disconnect…….

I don’t know what to tell ya bud……. I’m pulling the fairing next week to work on my amp and for what it’s worth I’m gonna check all my connections to the harness, etc although I don’t think that has anything to do with my problems……

Did you ever try another phone just for shits and giggles ?
