on my older road glide the push button for the starter sometimes failes to engage. I have changed the relay and it still happens sometimes it kicks off then others nothing, its not the starter there is no clicking just nothing happens. could the button its self be bad. I am about to change the bars should I replace the button?

any one ever have this trouble ?

I would start with your battery connections. The ground wire where it bolts to the frame could be corroded.

Using a known and accurate VOM to ensure there are zero voltage drops through the circuit. I usually find poor grounds the culprit.

Could just be the ignition switch. When it happens next time just wiggle the ignition switch a little and see if the starter engages. My ignition switch is getting a little worn out and I need to put on a new one but at times I can turn on the ignition and everything lights up but the starter won't engage so I just wiggle the switch and the starter kicks in. Once the bike starts there isn't a problem with the switch cutting out the engine so that's why I haven't replaced it yet but I should put it on my agenda.

I've had a solar issue, as has some others I know. Our solution was simple, there is a replacement starter endcap with a button on it. The button pushes the solenoid directly so if you ever have the no-start again you will have a backup. I got mine on eBay. Look for "Harley starter button" and you'll find them.

The question that I have for you, is how electronically inclined are you??

I had this issue on my '94 Ultra, my neighbor on his '96... I traced it down to a drop in the engagement wire from the bars to the starter.. (Starter V should have been = to Batt V; it was 7v, not 12v!) That wasn't enought to engage the starter. This is why the Cap button (prior to me) works so well! I fixed it in a different way!

I took a relay, and captured the starting button to the coil; then to ground.. The switched side I went from Batt -> relay common, and partial to starter engagement. Using the pin numbers it went somethign like this


Relay (12V/Common)

Pin. Wire
---------------------------------
85 Starter button from Bars
86 Ground
30 12V (Batt)
87 Starter engagement


This has saved my butt since I installed it; that is after I rebuilt the old starter, and then replaced it and 2 batteries. This has been on the bike for about 6 years, never had an issue since!

This actually happened to me the other day where I turned the ignition switch on and all the lights and gauges came on but not the fuel pump and the starter button would not work. Moved the ignition switch al little more and bingo, all was good.

The bad thing about the OP's issue is that there are so many possibilities as with most electrical issues. I would have put money on a corroded battery cable.

I'd also double check to make sure you're getting power to the starter or not when it fails to start.

For me it was a bad ground and I discovered my battery was weak as well.
Fixed the ground and replaced the battery and all has been good.
