first, what I had done before the current issue: I installed some 6.5" speakers (Polk audio) and adapter rings. Since the 6.5" speakers alone did not give me the volume boost I wanted (like some on hdf said they would) I added an amp. I installed a biketronics amp (which it seems from looking at their new website they don't sell anymore). I had the amp back in the spring but didn't get around to installing it until late June, just before vacation. All was well until I was about half way to Florida when the stereo went out. let's define this: head unit seems to work fine, music comes out but so does a ton of noise, then the right speaker goes quiet, not much out of left.

So, since the last thing before it stopped working was the amp, I removed it. stereo just made noise, sounded like crap. little if any music.

I got a hog tunes fltr speaker and amp kit and tweeter pod to start over from scratch. Installed that today. Now I get a bunch of loud noise out of the right speaker. Now, when I removed the 6.5" speaker, it had a tear in the out part of the cone - where it flexes. I figured that maybe the old amp was too much for the speakers and had hopes that the Hogtunes would work well. When I turned on the bike with the hog tunes, I got a few seconds of music and then just loud noise out of the right speaker and nothing else.

I am at a total loss. I wonder if the head unit is messed up, and what could I have done to mess that up?

Edit: Bike is 2010 FLTRX. Today I started it up and the stereo made a sound like a siren out of the right speaker. I have no clue what is going on.

Going to unhook everything except speakers and see how that is, then go from there. probably won't get to it until this weekend. As far as the biketronics unit, once I have the system sorted, I'll post up about selling it or what ever I have that works and don't need.

Too busy to work on it until this past weekend. I disconnected the hogtunes amp and tweeter pod, and just used the installed Hogtunes speakers. Got music from the left speaker fine. Right for a moment, then a bit of noise, then silent. I pulled out the stock speakers and plugged in one to the right lead. It was silent on the right side with the left playing fine. So at this point I think it is the head unit or the wiring (unlikely the wiring I think). So now I'm scheduling taking it in to have the dealer look at it. Will take it where I bought it, 200 miles away, as I feel I will have a significantly better chance of warranty coverage there than the closer dealer. Talked to 'em on the phone today and they were real helpful. I will load it in the trailer with the fairing outer removed and the stock speakers taken along, but not installed.

Now I just hope I get it back in time to ride enough to make my first year milage goal (12,000 miles in 12 months). I'm at 11,2xx currently. One year is Sept. 12, 2010.

I would put the bike back to sotck and put it back togather. If you take it to them apart and in peices it will lesson your chances of warranty coverage. Just my 2 cents. Oh and BTW it sounds like the head unit to me! If you want to rule out the speakers jsut swap them from left to right and see if the same one stops playing.

Took the bike to the dealer Saturday. They confirmed it is the head unit and have ordered a new one. Will be covered under warranty, just waiting on a new unit to get my bike back.
