I just want some other peoples opinions on what transpired today at my local dealer.

My stock head unit has been messing up lately. The LH speaker would be all static & garbled, then the unit would turn off & turn back on by itself, and then the display would go blank, but still play music, then come back on. I took it in today to have the dealer check it out, and they said that the head unit was bad, BUT that because of all the modifications done, they were not going to cover it.

When I bought it, it had the HD IPOD interface on it, and I added a Rockford Fosgate amp, and I added 2 6.5 RF speaker on the inner fairing and changed the stock two speakers to larger RF speakers.

I can't figure out how they can say that because of ALL THE MODS, they were not going to cover it.

Has anyone else had this problem? Also, what would be a good replacement deck to install?

Thanks!

On the one hand, it sounds like BS if the head unit is the fault, which I doubt. On the other hand, the fault is more likely is falty wiring between your parts and interference. If you installed the parts yourself, I suggest disassembling and carefully reassembly.

Regarding replacement of the head unit, unless you want CB, check out my thread at http://www.roadglide.org/showthread.php?t=136913

I am very happy with the setup. Though because of a manufacturing defect, way more time and levels of frustration occurred. Manufacturing defects can and will occur, and there is no reason for your "friendly" HD dealership to cover defects of non HD parts or installation issues of those parts.

My suggestion is to suck it up, purchase a $125 head unit and adapters for installation into the Road Glide and handlebar controls. Way better than HD OEM. And because you will be doing your own work, you will learn about your bike and reduce your dependence on the HD dealership.

Bull_Duck,

The techs at the dealer said that the head unit was bad. I checked all my connection this last weekend, and all the connections were soldered together, not crimped. I just wanted to make sure that the amp and speakers that I installed were good to go

Its amazing how some dealers go out of there way to help a customer out, While others could care less about you once you sign that check..Get yourself an aftermarket Headunit and experience what a real Stereo should sound like-Then go back to that Dealership and tell them to take that Radio and shove it.

rlaf75, yes I bought the bike from the same dealer that I took it too. I try to be good about buying parts from my local dealer, but not after this
If you bought the bike from that dealer with everything already "attached" to the radio prior to you owning it then I'd make a big stink about it. I'd bet that they knew what was on the bike when they took it in as trade or whatever and then sold it to you. I'm sure it's a dealer discretion thing but if you just bought then they should make it right as far as I'm concerned

This is exactly what I'm worried about as well. I do all of my own work on the bike. I confirmed last night my radio is shot (using the Harmon Kardon service manual that I dug up online). I've added two amps, Hawg-Wired speakers, the iPod interface and had my faceplate modified (by forum member Marty). I talked to my dealer about bringing the radio in ... and I can't bring in just the radio, I have to reassemble everything, ride the bike in and leave it there for them to troubleshoot. I have concerns that with the modifications they will not honor the warranty. Do I go through the hassle of reassembling and leaving the bike with them for days? Or do I just order a non-HD unit and install kit and put it in this weekend? It's a tough dilemma.

Good luck with your decision.

Cheers,
G

Not a tough dilemma at all. There is so much worrying and grinding of teeth by owners with a warranty on their bikes to receive warranty repairs. IMO, unless it is a major item, namely a part and labor with a large expense, then don't bother.

View the small stuff as deductibles. Ask the dealer to fix as you did, dealer confirmed the head was bad, and told you to "suck air" (a scuba diver term). So what do you do? What is it worth to you? Is it your pride? Like the 1960s song "Walk on by,..."

The Harmon Kardon HD head unit had it not the HD logo would have a market price of at most $30. Add the HD logo and you have a $300 ebay item (buy mine, please. $300 and I'll pay shipping! :) )

What is your time worth, namely your billing rate? $15 hour, $30, $500 ? Even at $15 an hour it is not worth your time of two hours to haggle with the dealership. Suck it up. Buy a good New head unit as I did for $125, and enjoy your music.

But don't forget the lack of follow through and shoddy service you received.

My local dealer, wanted me to bring the bike in and leave it while they removed the radio and waited for another to come in So they could "test" it.The problem was no backlight.I talked to the sister dealer of the one I bought my bike from, they ordered a radio, ups'd it to me with a return label for the old one.

I installed it,and took it in when it was convenient for me and they did the programming.I guess it's just the difference between dealers.

I kinda agree. Establish a good relationship with the service manager at your local dealer, (Beer helps), and you should never have another problem. Only thing is not everyone is a professional. If you don't get treated right, walk away. If you have an ESP, any dealer is authorized to honor it. If your loccal shop is staffed with dickheads, move on to the next. Your attitude when dealing with people is directly related to how they will deal with you. Not saying you have to kiss their ass, but a little good will goes a long way.

Go to another dealer and see what they say!
When doing warranty work on the radio most dealers want the bike in the shop then they remove the radio and send it our for repairs or a refurbished unit and the bike sits in the shop until the work is done.
With used HK units available for a decent price it is almost better to address the problem yourself just because you don't lose riding time

They have to prove your mods broke the radio, I'd also see another dealer if you're dead set on getting the HK replaced. I personally have had mine replaced once already and will be replacing it with a Kenwood unit should I experience any more issues with it.

I experienced the blank face while still playing music. It was intermittent, so I never bothered to take it my dealer. My dealer isn't very good anyway.
When the radio quits altogether, I'll replace it.
Anybody use a Sony ?

My Dealer (that I have a great relationship with for almost 15 years) told me that if they misdiagnose a radio and send it in for replacement that H-D charges them full price ($1k) for the radio.

Try Iron Cross Audio, they are great!

Update

Well, after talking to my dealer yesterday for quite some time, they have agreed to warranty the head unit for me. So for now I'm happy, until it craps out again, but then I will just get a aftermarket stereo & install it

By new you mean refurbished don't you? I never heard of the Moco replacing any radio with a brand new one. My buddy bought a CVO EGU last year and the radio messed up on the way home and he took it right back to the dealer. They replaced it, with a refurbished one! I thought that was bullshit on any bike but their 40k dollar flagship, but it was take it or leave it!! Now thats CUSStomer service!
