Had a good ride today, Va Highway 58 West from Galax to Abingdon TN then 421 from near Bristol to Mtn City on the part of US 421 called "The Snake", 489 turns in 33 miles and all that. I told gr8bigdude even though it was an great ride, more turns and switchbacks than we could count, what we'd remember was the bear.

Coming down 58 into Damascus TN, gr8bigdude was out ahead when a small bear ran across the road in front of him. He can say how close but close enough for sure. Too quick to have gotten a picture but it was pretty unusual. May not seem to be a big deal, it is the mountains and that's where they live, just not accustomed to seeing them cross the road so close to 2 Harleys bellowing down the mountain.

Now the guy in the pickup pulling a horse trailer that pulled out of a drive way in a blind curve in front of us is another story altogether.

I'll be ready to go back soon, run the route in the opposite direction...and watch for bears.

Glad you got to see the bear, Blue. I saw a mother and cub last fall on the Skyline Drive. Prior to that, had one cross in front of me near Little Switzerland. It's neat to see them.

Have seen lots of bears in years gone by---while backpacking and camping in the smokies.

It's always a treat.

Little black bear was gettin' it across the road! Just a flash of fur and he was gone....
The truck pulling out on us in the blind corner caused me to grip the saddle with my buttocks and look for options: pucker factor of 8 on a 1-10 scale. Oncoming traffic on one side and a mountain on the other left nothing but hard braking as an option. Good thing I was leading with my lowered scooter, as we were running 5mph slower around the curves than your stock suspension can accommodate.
Highway 58 (aka the twist) is a great ride! I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it. The snake was everything I expected. I want to go back to Hungry Mother and ride up to Tazwell some weekend.

Your title reminded me of a trip I made to the area several years ago with a buddy. We had planned to go through Damascus VA and he had a new GPS and did not realize he put in Damascus TN. It was an interesting ride since I kept asking him where we were going, but he insisted his GPS was right. The good thing was that it was a great ride and the two towns are only 24 miles apart.
