I have a ticking sound in my 06RG EFI, unsure if it is the injectors or the valve train. Haven't noticed it at idle. Had a Kawasaki with loud injectors before but unsure what is "normal" on the HD. Bike only has 26,000 miles on it.

What did you do to narrow it down to the EFI?

When you say "haven't noticed at idle" do you mean the sound increases with rpm's?

Anyway, when's the last oil change? Oil weight? Oil at capacity?

Maybe try some gas/EFI treatment in the gas tank to clear any varnishes, gum, etc. Then change oil...

Anything else is probably a engine mechanical problem which is beyond my help.

Need some help here guys...;)

Joke, the sound is only noticeable under load (in gear). The oil is full, 20w50 about 1000 miles on it. I drove it today, no music etc and it is about 95* out today. Oil pressure was at 28-32 psi depending on rpm. Upon further attention it is more like a sewing machine hum then a tick and I strongly believe that it is just a standard valve train noise. Changing to a different brand of bikes takes some getting use to the "norms".

Love this forum, tons of info and tips. ordered a service manual yesterday and spoke with a local indie but forgot to ask that question reference this noise. They were very helpful on the other questions I asked. :)

When you said "sewing machine", you hit it right on the head. That is the sound that everyone hears. It's normal. My Road Glide does it and my FXSTI does it. I actually didn't notice it as much on the softail, until I put a windshield on it.

Yep, sewing machine noise - mine makes it too. I changed my oil to 20w-50 syn. and I thought that might quiet it down but it didn't. So I put it off as normal valve-train noise too. Well, next time you're at the indie and you ask and get an answer let us know. Till then...

Joke, PGR thanks for the replies and clearing this up for me. I will ask the indie next time (hope I remember). I will be running 20w50 syn in the engine; unsure what I will run in the transmission and primary most likely HD standards or 20w50. May put an oil cooler on next spring as well and replace the ambient temp gauge for an oil temp gauge.

Funny you use the sewing machine analogy. I'm still using my stock pipes until my RB Racing pipes arrive. I keep telling my friends that I feel as if I'm riding a Singer sewing machine. Like the others said, it's normal.

I also remember the a few yeas back when the front wheel on a touring bike sounded like a swarm of bees.

Could also be excessive pushrod travel. I've experienced the 'sewing machine' noise with a previous S&S engine. Turns out the lifters weren't holding compression and pushrods were out of adjustment. The noise is more noticeable when the engine warms, and the oil heats and thins a bit.

My Streetglide was an 06 and I don't believe that year had an automatic adjuster for the primary chain drive. When those get a little loose they can cause some strange noises coming from the engine. I had to adjust mine on the Streetglide only once, but I had a 98 sportster that seemed like it needed an adjustment every 1k miles!

Bump it up to a 107, adjustable push rods, and some cams, maybe throw in a new exhaust system too... Worked for me, no sewing machine noises any more. :D
